The Beast of Metapan And Other Stories

Metapán, a city and municipality in the Santa Ana department of El Salvador. It borders Honduras and Guatemala, as it is located in the north of the country. It’s the second largest city, and in Nahuatl, it means, “river of the Maguey”. It's also a little espooky! In this episode, Cristina and Carmen share three stories from this town.

Hi, this is Christina and Carmen and this is another episode of Spooky Tale. It's the podcast for all things a spooky hunting places, miss Legends, true crime in Latin America. But today just as spooky and short because I don't know, we're playing catchup. So we are still playing catch up. But look, we're going to be good for the new year. Yeah, oh wait, this is gonna come out on Friday, but it's the first Friday of the year. It's still the new year. After this episode, we're going to be good and we're going to be back to normal episodes, but not today, not today. Also, the true crime case we're working on right now is fucking heavy. It is. Yeah, it's heavy. It's a heavy one. So we're just doing this spooky story by itself and probably that true crime case by itself, and then we'll be back to normal. Yeah. So yeah, first, I guess happy New Year. I hope you made at twelve grapes. I hope you wore whatever color underworld corresponds to what you were wanting to see this year in twenty twenty six. Yeah, you ran around. I hope you ran around the house with your suitcase to have a year full of travels. I know I did. I also did that already. I would like a year full of Yeah. By the time this comes out, we will have each individually. You're supposed to be around the block, remember, yeah, but you know not doing that. My block is on my block. Oh yeah, downy Hills are on my block. No, that's crazy. Pleasant training. The intent I'm going to set the intention, that's what it's about. Yes, the intention is to travel. Yes. And yeah, if you're like a vision board person, I hope you did that too. Whatever whatever it is that you do, I hope you were able to do it to bring in the new year because you're get drunk. Cool. That's cool too. Yes, I can't or I'm so tired that I miss doing that. But I'm not trying to run. I'm trying to my first run of the year on the first day of the year. Me too, So you know what, that's another thing. By the time this comes out, we would have had our first runs of the year. Yes, yes, good for us, good for us, go us all right? Anyway, moving on, we do have a spooky story today is all about a little town. Yes, and before that, we do have a listener story. And if you have a story that you want to send us, there are several ways you can get it to us. You can email as spooky tes at gmail dot com. You can dam on us on any of our socials, so you can call these Spooky hotline. There's a couple there waiting that we're going to do over the next episodes. Someone sent me a story and they sent some pictures corresponding with that story, so that's fun. Thank you for that. I did receive them. But we're still there's a line. We have a backup, a queue if you will skip and go to that one. Okay. Anyway, Yeah, there's a lot of ways to get us your stories. I forgot how this one came to us, and I also didn't write down the name. So okay, of course you had to get into a track of this. Yes, next year, this year, this means the year we're going to be organized this year this year maybe no, not okay, And let's get into it. And it is a title I'm not known. Yeah, okay, we have a title for this one. This story takes place around two thousand and four in my family's old farmhouse in a small town in Idaho. When I was about seven years old. It was summertime, and as a farm working family, we spent summers in the orchards picking cherries or whatever other farm work was available. Because it was exhausting work, my parents would go to sleep super early while us kids would stay up and quietly hang out. We would all sit around in the girls room, the room I shared with my other sisters, and talk. I would listen to my older siblings exchange stories and whispers. A lot of stories were a spooky, like when Chino and Hira saw the devil drinking tapwater from the kitchen sink. Okay, son that went in? Yes? Or when my theo the baby with teeth that could talk. They say it was debunked and then so I would love to hear that, though no matter what, I would yes. Most stories, however, were about when my parents had moved the whole family to Mexico for a year and a half in the late nineties. I was only a toddler at the time and I don't remember much, but I listened in awe as I heard the older siblings describe experiences we had living in the rancho in Mechakan. I very much remember having Fomo and not wanting to miss anything. So this particular time when I was thirsty, I waited for a loll in the story telling and quickly snuck out to the kitchen to get a cup of water. I went quietly and without turning on the lights so as not to risk waking at my parents, because my dad was a real grumpa when he woke up. I feel you. As I was walking back to the girl's room with my cup of water, I saw a figure my side, who I thought was my brother Noni, who was only younger than me, standing in the entrance to the living room, which I had to walk through to get to the girls room. Noni no bumped into me and I spilled the water on me and the floor. I told him with the annoyance, look, Noni, you made me spill my water. I'm going to go tell a cruise who's our older sister, that I was gonna tattle tell too. But when I looked back at Noni, I saw his eyes were glowing a greenish color, and I heard a little creaky, high pitched voice say I'm not Nony. I burst the eyes and the voice off, thinking it was a trick of my imagination. Given the stories I had been listening to. I ran passed him and over to the girl's room, ready to snitch. When I saw him, NONI sitting on the bed cuddled up next cruise. Bitch. What no, no, no, that is my story. Sorry, it's so long. I had been wanting to write it down for a long time, mostly for myself, which is why I included so much detail. But I also thought I share with y'all for the pod, and thank you so much. Wait, thank you for that. That was so good. That sh dude, when there's a story, it's like and they passed by me. Yeah, no, They're like I saw them, and then when I walked to the room, they're like, we're sleeping. You're like, okay, well fuck me. I probably just fucking die right then and there. Literally, I would Metgagoing Menero, like I always say I would. I would put myself and then I would die. So wow, Yes, thank you for sending that in. It was spooky. Like I said, this is a short episode. We're only doing a paranormal section, story segment. I went in segment segment segment. That's the what I was looking for. Yes, and all the stories today are from a place called Metapan. This is a city and a municipality in the Santa Ana department of It borders on Luas and Guatemala and it's in the very like north part of Ta hence bordering. It's the second largest city in the Santa Ana department and in now it means river of the Magai. Oh yeah. It's also known as Lati la Blanca because of all the calisa or limestone found in the town. It's like a reserve for limestone, and because it was such a natural resource, they used to use it to paint all the buildings white, so all the houses, everything was white white, and that's why it was called Lasila a blanca. Oh wow. Metapan is also well known for like Lesia the San Pedro, which has been open since seventeen forty three. Wow, I love all things. We need to go. Let's go, yeah, to look at this old as church. We've said this many times. It's a Catholic church, right, Yes. The Catholic in me, the non practicing Catholic in me loves an old Catholic church. I love it. Every time we go to Guadalajara, even though we're not religious. We have to stop at first last Basilica, then the cathedral and everywhere we go we love to look at an old church. Yeah. I did a tour in Mexico city of Lavasilica. Lovely. I think once you actually go inside the newer Vasilika, you can go in and just explore. They gave you time to explore. But anyway, the tourists, the tour guide is all like he told us exactly the like how they abuse indigitous people and that the what an informative tour, no it was, and that the indigenous people in their own way, they snuck like they resisted in little ways and they like drew like their own images and the you know, ceilings and whatnot. And he showed us where. It was amazing, Wow, I need to go there, and you know what, so the ceilings are all gold, right, and people go in there and they get so emotional because obviously they get hope and whatever from their faith. And me I felt rage. I love so fucking bad. I was like, yeah, you're human inside. But then it kind of went away because then our mom was like crying. She was like on your eyes because it was she had a rough. She had a rough for a long time, and so yeah, when she went there, it was like everything, you know, yeah I met her and so like I feel like you get one of two experiences, a rage or awe emotion or rage yeah, which is still an emotion valid, that is, yeah, yeah valid still. But yeah, this is on my list of old churches to visit because seventeen forty three, that's fucking yeah old. And so yeah, this church iglet to the San Pedro. In the middle of the choir, there's a phrase that reads, this building of Metapan was finished in June of seventeen forty three in blurred blue letters, but still there. Also in the church there's a sculpture of a crucified Christ that dates back to the seventeenth century. Wow. And there's also catacombs underneath the church. Three of these catacombs were sealed shut and only one remains open. Back when this church was first built, there was this belief that the deper you were buried in the ground, the closer you were to God, and that yes, and that's what the catacombs were used for that and then like bury people there. And so there are people buried in the catacombs, but no one knows how many because the other three have been sealed, there's no way to get to them, and like there was never a like archaeological or anthropological study done. There's also this legend that these catacombs are connected to these other two churches in town and like little stories of them being connected for sinister purposes and other old buildings in the town. But this is not true. According to this historian of this video that I watched, there's no tunnels underneath the city like that. Oh, I see, the only tunnels under the church connect to the other three catacombs. Oh okay, that's the only things that connect to each other were the catacombs. And currently you have to move two rows of pews and then lift these giants set of trap doors to get into the catacombs. And it's very Yes, apparently you have to get permission from the priests. Oh, but they'll usually do Yeah, okay, okay. The guy that I watched three or four videos and they're all touring the catacombs are very I guess they let people in. Yeah. Nice. However, again one is three year sealed and so you can only access one of the catacombs. And this catacomb was like the entrance to the other catacombs. It was like, no one was buried in this one. Oh, this is the entrance, and then you get to the other three that's where people are buried. It's super interesting to see people go down there. It looks creepy, but there's no ghost stories about this this set of catacombs. It's buried there right right, but it is very creepy looking watching them go down there. I'll put a little clips here in our video. Also, this church has a what's it called the big bells, just the big bells, you know, the ones that you ring like the bell of liberty. And so one of the videos I watch churches have those belts because they ring when MISA starts. I feel like newer churches have like an automated system that like has speakers and not like older ones have them. But I don't think newer ones do, and all of them maybe, I don't know. I could be wrong. I'm not that Catholic. Let us know. If all of them have it, I don't know, but this one does. And he had the video that it watched. She's going up these like narrow ass stairs all the way up to the bell tower or whatever. So that was cool to watch. It looks creepy, it looks like it will be haunted. It's not, though, And so yeah, that's the church. But there's also stories of this lake that's also in Metepa. This lake is called Lake Guika and according to legend, in pre Columbian times, there was no lake there. Instead, it was a city called Guikant. But when the volcano erupted, a you know, lava flow came down this centered into the city, destroying it somehow, overflowing some river that was already there. This overflow volcano combo flooded the former town and so the lake formed. But the city, the former city of Guicat is under the lake, oh wow, at the bottom of the lake. Yeah. And they say that at night you can see lights coming from the bottom of this lake and those lights are the ghosts of the former villagers. Wow. And to add to the mystery of this lake, there's also this little island that is like in the middle of the lake. There's this settle las figras that surrounds the lake. And these are these giant rocks with petrol glyphs so like, are carved into them. And these are at least one than hundred years old, and first mention of the settle can be dated back to fifteen seventy six in some codex where Diego Diego Garalazos wrote about the location and he said it was a place of ritual and sacrifice. And this adds to the mystery and the ghost stories. Yes, the Lord, well, do you know when that volcano eruption thing happened and flooded the city of Guija. No. I tried to find them more information, but the war kept coming up. Was before the Spanish because when this Spanish guy wrote about it in the codex, it was already flooded. I see no, okay, and our last story, do you want to read it? Sure? So this is the Beast of Metapan. The story happened to Eliseo Juarez who lived in Metapan, and this is from Frequencia Paranormal YouTube channel. Liseo was twenty five when this happened and he made a living selling fruits and vegetables, and a lot of his work took him to Guatemala selling produce there too. He had a lot of clients there, but he, like so many faced issues during COVID. Oh, this is recent this is a recent story. So he faced issues during COVID, like, for example, the borders of it were closed were closed try and control the spread of the disease, and Elisel's business took a hit. But he had to make a living and he found a way to sneak into what thee Mala. He found a man named Don Agustine to help him. Don Agustine assured him that he knew a way into what THEEMLA that most people didn't use because they knew or highway was built and only a small handful of farm workers used this road. So Don Agustine told him they could even use it a few times a week and no one would notice. That sounds scary already, Like yeah, like what do you mean this isolated? Anything could happen and no one would know. Yeah. Eliseo didn't really like the idea of breaking the rules, but he needed to do what needed to do, so he agreed. They went back and forth a few times, mostly at dusk, and it really wasn't isolated road. The military never patrolled this area and on the several crosses he and Don Agustine made, they saw absolutely no one. Oh, Eliseo was afraid that if something happened to them, no one would find them. A very valid fear. Yeah, but he was soon learned that there was something else to be afraid of. Scary. Don't, don't, don't. One night they left on their usual journey. It was around twelve thirty seven am. That's not dusk, it's midnight. Sometimes they left that dusk. Sometimes they left in the middle of the night. Okay, gotcha, gotcha. Yeah, they were talking and joking, but the mood shifted when they turned a curve. They sound bulto ahead of them. A shape in the road just sounds scarier, even though yeah, it really does anytime. Like our mom always talked to us about ghosts, and she said budo was like ten times scarier. I was like, oh no, I don't want to hear this wor not a bo anything. But yes, they couldn't tell what it was, but when they got closer and the headlights from the truck made it easier to see, they could tell it was moving. It was big, grayish in color and hairy, and it looked like some kind of animal. But then they saw it stand on two legs like a person. But this was not a person. I had to tell that should not be standing on two legs had a freaking tell, and it turned to look at them, and there was something in its mouth, now discussing truly. Before Elisia could say anything, Don Agustin yelled that thing was from hell and he pressed on the gas. He's like, funck this shit, yes, pressing the guests. The thing stood in the middle of the road. It seemed unfazed as a truck sped toward it. Ah, he spread toward it. I thought he like sped away from it. No, No, I think it was in their way. Yeah, I see they were going that way. Yeah. It eventually moved at a crazy speed at the last second, and then it was nowhere to be seen. Well, that's disturbing. They continued on their way, still scared but relieved, and they kept on making the trip. A few days past and they started to leave earlier instead of the middle of the night, hoping they wouldn't see that thing again. And at first that worked out, but on the same day they thought they saw it on the side of the truck following them. That's worse. He's like, that's what you get for trying to run me over. This would continue to happen, and they would tell each other that it was just some sort of wild dog. Yeah, sure, try and commit each other that that's not what they sound for sure, for sure, and we'd be doing the same thing. I wouldn't go but yeah, but yeah, but yeah. A few more days passed and something was blocking the narrow road. They had no choice but to get out of the truck and see if they could move it. Oh my god, it's trapping them. It's playing with them, dude, Fuck, it's talking them. Yeah, it is there, very cheeper sweepers like. When they did, they saw that it was a dead cow that had a huge slash across its stomach, but there was no blood. It was as if something had cleaned it from the inside. They started to worry. Something was obviously not right, though I was Seeing grabbed Elissa's arm and told him it was that thing and they had to go now. They ran back to the truck and were about to get in when they heard a terrifying rowl. Done I was seeing, yelled the look as he pointed to a nearby hill. They saw a creature running on all fours and it was heading straight for them. Oh my god. They ran and almost didn't make it inside. The thing pounded, don't I Wasine's door, and then it ran over to the cow. They got a good look and it was man shaped, but with the appearance of a dog or wolf. It had sharp claws and teeth, and it growled again, and he said yelled, asking what the fuck is that? Done? I was seen? I was like, bitch, I don't know, and then told that they sailed to hold on, so he hit the gas, heading straight for the thing. This time it wasn't moving done I was seen steered away from it, and they thought they would flip over, but they didn't. They kept yeah suspense and they kept going, but the thing kept running after them, keeping up with the speed of the truck. Right. Don't like that. At one point it was running right next to the truck on Agusin instructed the sail to once again hold on. Then he turned the steering wheel and hit the thing with the side and kept going. The thing finally stopped chasing them and they were able to get away. They made it to Guatemala and came back in the afternoon instead of the middle of the night. Smart move. They started making this trip earlier and earlier they would also stop in different bublows on their way to Guatemala, and they would notice that in these purblows, in these spurlows that led to that road, almost no one was found outside when the sun began to set, almost as if they know something right right. During one of their stops at one of these purblows, they talked to a man named Don and they told him what they had seen on the road. Donald told them that no one likes to talk about it, but for a long time now, a beast roams these roads. No one knows why it's there, where it's from, when it got there. They don't know anything. They just know they're not going outside. Yeah yeah, And many have fled the area because of it, and the rest of them stay inside after it gets dark. They noticed that it would attack their animals, and they started leaving sacrifices to it, specifically they're sick or already dying animals. Some say it's an a whe that came from Ahiko a brujo, some sort of sheep shifting creature, but believes came from Hell. He told Don, Agustine and Listill to leave, avoid that road at night and never tell anyone about this creature, and luckily for them, the COVID restrictions went away and they never had to use that damned road again. But they wonder if that beast is still on the road in Metapan, but they don't wonder enough to get and they're not that cutely that much. And you know what, I'm actually not going to go see that church because what if I need to use this road, I'm not. I'm not there because we don't need to go to into Watemla. Oh you're right, you're right, And if we do, we're taking another road. Yeah, we're not using this road. Flying in ten minutes light, yes, flying in from I love that anything, So I use this road exactly. Scary Oh my god. M okay, well that was fun. This was a Mexi sadby episode like us. Oh I was like, what was the Mexican part of the listener story? The listener story was from Mexico. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. Well before the episode ends, do you have any spooky recommendations? Well, the most recent horror book I read was when You already recommended and it was amazing, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter. Oh yes, yes, it was so good. It was so good. Words cannot even describe. I will say that I kind of wish it was all in the past. Yeah, and that experience with timeline books like that, like I almost never really care for them. Timeline, I would say. The only one I didn't feel that with was the bee Waching. Oh yeah, no, the Bewitching. I didn't feel like that at all. But this one, I guess, I guess it made sense because you know, you would happen at the end, you know, not spoiler here. That show was crazy and it couldn't have happened there was a modern timeline, So I just I guess, I'll just say my favorite was good Stab of course, same that ship was crazy, that that part, that part, and that was so disgusting to think about too. But yes, I when I read it, I paused and I was like, and no one was near me, And it's the same. Yeah. So because if if poor Kyle had been there, I would want to Kyle Kyle this book, and then I would have recapped everything up to that point, right, because you had to explain because how doesn't make sense, It doesn't make any sense. So he was lucky he wasn't there. Yeah, but I was. I was just saying I was like, oh my god, that shows my cause, and if you read the book, you know I was absolutely no, yeah, yeah, yeah. I like the ending note because there was some sort of retribution, yes, which I love. And that's not a spoiler because it does say, like a lot of things describe it as a revenge story. Yeah, one hundred percent is. So I'm excited too, because so for twenty twenty six, I'm trying to I have books that in like my bookshelves that I haven't read. Oh, are you going to do a jar? I'm not doing a jar. I'm lazy as fuck, dude. I'm not doing it. It's for me because I don't pick them out and instead I go buy new books or I read something from Libby on my kindle. Yes, I'm simply going to walk over to my shelf and grab one or pick something new I just bought instead of shit, I've had it there for fucking years, years, bro, like years. Oh yeah, yeah, no, yeah, actually I might. What I might do is put them into some sort of spreadsheet and then just pick them in that way. From this, so I was gonna do that. I was gonna get an app like I spin the wheel type of app but there wasn't enough slots to put all the books I have, So that's why I ended up just you know what, I don't have that many books. How many books you have that you haven't I haven't countered them. I haven't counted them. But twenty maybe a mos Yeah, that's doable. It's because famously, as everyone knows, I'm a Seattle girlely now we're in the city, I'm a coastal elite, if you will. Yes, it's a very small space and I down sized. Yeah, I downsized a ton when we moved. And basically my plan going forward is keeping books that are dearer to me in a very special way and then just like maybe trying to even organize some book swaps myself. That'd be fun. But also if you don't, well I can just come to the book swap and get the books that I want. Because I'm I have a whole room that I'm going to dedicate to a library. Yeah, I have limited out of space right now. I'm so excited for this library. I am also I wish that we were in the same place so that we could turn that into a recording studio. Yeah, I mean I'm going to such a cute background. It's gonna be your recording studio. Yeah, yeah, it's gonna look cute. But yeah, so, so I don't have a lot of books on had and after i read these, I'm not keeping all of them. I'm gonna or it's a book swap, swap some books, but I'm trying to utilize almost exclusively the library. Okay, cool, I kind of want to start using my library a little bit more to actually go. Do you have a recommendation? Yeah, yeah, I do. I've been watching a lot of movies this year, so I'm going to have an endless list of speak your recommendations. But this recommendation, I don't know why it took so long to watch this movie, but the substance, Oh I still need to watch that. Oh my god, it was so good. You would love it, I know. Yeah, it was so fun. But also at the same time, like deep, you know, like this wouldn't have happened if the patriarchy worse. Everything ties back to that. No, but yeah, like unsetting setting these unrealistic beauty standards for women that the protagonist herself, you know, falls into and is also spreading and participating in fully, we all participate in that every day. Yes, no, we really do, really do. But then like I don't know, the there's this like just like it's depressing to think about it that like she could have had a second chance when I don't think this is spoiling anything with the substance because it's in like what this is about, yeah, okay, that she has like a second version of herself. Okay, so yeah, I think everybody knows that. Okay, so it's not spoiling anything. This second version of herself is it's a new chance out life and she's right, it's a second version of Demimore. Yeah yeah, yeah. She instead of like I don't know, changing it changing, she falls harder into this uh lifestyle and to participating into these unrealistic beauty standards. So that's like like that's what she chose to do with her second life, like she could have like but it was that same need to be wanted to be beautiful, you know. So yeah that's like that's that was something. But it was it was fun the ending. I was like I was having a blast. I really was. I need to watch this you really do you really do again? I'll bring it with me Oh wait, it's on HBO. Yeah, me, just watch it and you still have HBO did you get it for free? That is my recommendation unless everyone else has seen it. I'm like the last one to watch it. But if you haven't seen it except me, I'm sad. I'm sad that it took so long to watch this. That would have been amazing to watch in theaters. Oh, I'm sure. Yeah. It's also very visually interesting because like the the way the men are portrayed. Of course, it's like these they're I'm intrigued. She uses a fish eye lens. Oh wow, I need to And so the guy what's his name? Oh my god, he's the papa of the guy from The Boys. I don't know. Quaid is their last name? Oh Dennis, Dennis, Yes, Dennis Quaid. So like, there's a there's a review of the movie that's like, somehow the most discussing thing about this movie is Dennis Quaid eating shrimp that is filmed. No, my ears were suffering from that. The sound design in this movie amazing discussing at the same time, but the worst part of it was that fish eye lens scene of him shrimp discussing absolutely I know what's coming. Yeah, yeah, but no, it's so fun. It's up there in my favorite horror movies and I watched this year, so oh yeah, very fun. Yeah, that's my recommendation. Noise, do you have time to pick out a goal for this podcast? Any size? A known six? Oh my god, I talk about that a little bit. I always just sprung that on you. I don't know. I guess a boring goal is for I want to actually sit down and have a time frame and scheduled to work on my notes instead of last minute. Oh my god, it's my turn. Let me just see what I can turn up. Like. I want to be more intentional and more like on top of those things. And that is just my I can't think beyond that. I have a similar goal, okay, just get organized, to get organized and not be last minute with both podcasts, that is my goal. My other goal always is to have fun. Obviously tell the story. Given if we're talking, we're having we're having fun. Yeah, But my other one is to hopefully do some of the same things we did this year. You know, what would I say more? Because I feel like that was a lot already. It was a lot. I don't if I just one more time next year, that'd be cool more.
