A True Haunting from Rural Colombia (Campfire Story)

A True Haunting from Rural Colombia (Campfire Story)

In this episode, we explore a firsthand childhood account set in a remote Colombian town, centered on a centuries-old colonial home with a long and troubled past. As Gabby’s family settles in, unsettling encounters begin to unfold, witnessed not just by her, but by visitors, relatives, and neighbors. Strange figures, unexplained sounds, and lingering presences tell the stories of something far older embedded in the walls themselves. It eventually forces the family to confront what the house is holding onto and why leaving may be the only way to survive it.

00:00:00
In a rural area of Columbia, there is this colonial house

00:00:04
where the experience that I'm about to tell you comes from,

00:00:08
and it's one of the most haunting stories that I've heard

00:00:10
to this day. I think you're the end.

00:00:12
You're going to know exactly why I find it this way.

00:00:16
You ready? My name is Edwin and this is

00:00:19
Paranormal Club. Welcome back Swoopies, to

00:00:27
another episode. This time we have this campfire

00:00:31
style story. And it's true, this one was

00:00:34
submitted to me by Gabby a long time ago and it showed up in one

00:00:38
of our podcasts. But I find this story so

00:00:40
immersive and so haunting. I still think about it to this

00:00:44
day. So what happened was back in the

00:00:48
90s, Gabby was a little girl and she was going to be moving into

00:00:54
this colonial house. This house is 200 or 250 years

00:00:58
old, so it's pretty old. There's terracotta tiles,

00:01:02
there's white clay walls, old roofs.

00:01:06
And sometimes it's so peaceful there that you can also hear

00:01:10
pigeons kind of making their nests in the different areas of

00:01:13
the house. You kind of hear them doing the

00:01:16
whole in the middle of the night.

00:01:21
Another thing that happened there is that since it was rural

00:01:26
and it was those areas that sometimes are hot and as you're

00:01:28
walking down, you feel that coolness of of the tile on

00:01:31
against your feet. There was a sense of this house

00:01:35
feels cool, feels nice, right to be out there.

00:01:38
And I've always imagined houses like that being a part of nature

00:01:42
itself, right? Like those those kind of

00:01:45
colonial houses. And this one was was kind of

00:01:47
large, right? You had a kitchen, guest room,

00:01:51
an old kind of smoking room, magazine.

00:01:53
They used to smoke meats there because it was dark and like

00:01:56
ashy and they had a courtyard there.

00:02:00
So it was like a childhood dream, right to to live there.

00:02:04
But in that same place that felt and looked so happy, so joyful,

00:02:08
so peaceful, also had a very dark secret.

00:02:13
And the thing was that this house had seen a lot of

00:02:16
different important events, right?

00:02:18
Cholera, war from the Spanish colonial times and all those

00:02:22
unsettling things that happened during those era, you know, the

00:02:25
era. So there was a lot of memories,

00:02:28
a lot of stories that were engraved inside those walls.

00:02:33
This is where it gets interesting, right?

00:02:34
Because Gabby's family moves in to get settled and everything's

00:02:39
fine, right? They they like the place, they

00:02:42
like the area, but as they start exploring more of their

00:02:46
surroundings and living the day-to-day life to find out that

00:02:50
they might not be alone at the house.

00:02:53
Now, Gabby Gabby had this luck that her mom was spiritually

00:02:59
sensitive. So if there were any kind of

00:03:01
ghosts around, any kind of spirits that were lingering, the

00:03:04
mom wouldn't be like, you're just making that up.

00:03:06
No, she would be like, oh, like, let's let's find out what this

00:03:10
is, right? This is where it leads to the

00:03:12
very first event, right? Gabby had this cousin Javier

00:03:16
Small. And as he's going in there, the

00:03:20
like he he's in the house already.

00:03:22
He sees this man in black come in and he thinks it's the uncle.

00:03:27
So he's like, hey, uncle, Hey, Theo.

00:03:30
The uncle ignores him, completely ignores him.

00:03:34
So he's like, OK, that was weird.

00:03:36
Later on, he tells a mom, like Gabby's mom.

00:03:38
It's like, hey, I just saw my uncle, but you didn't say hi.

00:03:43
Like, is everything all right? Now remember the uncle here,

00:03:47
like, Javier's uncle is Gabby's dad.

00:03:51
But Gabby's father was a way for work, so he wasn't around.

00:03:57
Who did he see? It was an actual stormy night.

00:04:03
How typical scary story begins normally.

00:04:05
Right there is Thunder, lightning, and rain, and every

00:04:09
single time there's lightning, it lights up the entire room of

00:04:13
Gabby. Gabby's right there in in her

00:04:15
bed. Now while she's looking out the

00:04:17
window of, you know, the the storm going about, she suddenly

00:04:22
sees this man, a black figure, large frame standing right

00:04:28
outside of her window. Annoyed, Gabby just gets up,

00:04:34
closes the curtains and goes back to sleep.

00:04:37
You would think, wow, what a brave person, right?

00:04:41
Well, in the morning Gabby wakes up and she starts feeling

00:04:46
something itchy and she notices there's something in her, in her

00:04:48
hair. Turns out there's twigs and

00:04:51
sticks and grass and dirt. She looks down at her feet and

00:04:55
they're muddy and the the sheets are dirty with mud.

00:05:00
And that's what she realizes that she might have slept walk

00:05:04
and been out in the rain early in the morning.

00:05:08
She's trying to clean the sheets, right?

00:05:10
She's like, oh, jeez, I'm gonna get in trouble.

00:05:12
So she tries not to tell her mom, but the mom finds out,

00:05:16
right? She sees the bucket with soap

00:05:18
and everything. Her trying to clean and wash

00:05:20
the, the the sheet right there. She's like, what happened,

00:05:23
right? That's what she tells, like she

00:05:25
might have slept a lot. So the mother decides to lock

00:05:28
the doors at night like so that she doesn't leave again.

00:05:32
And where did Gabby go? What happened?

00:05:35
And who was that man? Unfortunately, that was not the

00:05:40
last time that she saw this man. Turns out, in another dark and

00:05:45
stormy night, everything's happening again.

00:05:48
Thunder, lightning, rain. And all of a sudden, when the

00:05:53
lightning strikes, she sees the inside of her room.

00:05:56
But she realizes that she's not alone this time.

00:05:59
There's a man out there. That man that was outside of the

00:06:01
window, he's now inside and standing right there holding the

00:06:06
door open. She doesn't feel scared, She

00:06:11
doesn't feel irritated and panic or anything.

00:06:15
Instead, she gets up, closes the door, kind of annoyed that she's

00:06:20
she's being woken up. The man's gone.

00:06:23
She goes back to sleep. The thing is, even the first

00:06:27
time that she saw him, she saw this man with like white

00:06:30
yellowish glowing eyes. And this is the same thing that

00:06:35
she was seeing inside of the room this time again, who was

00:06:39
this man in black? Now I want you to remember like

00:06:43
she and her family like really like that house, right?

00:06:47
It was peaceful, it was joyful, felt nice, like it was like a a

00:06:50
beautiful place. And, and they really seem to

00:06:52
enjoying their, their time there.

00:06:54
The strange things were happening and everybody was

00:06:57
noticing. And this next one is about the

00:06:59
children. So by this time, Gabby's little

00:07:02
brother is like playing with stuff like a toy trucks and, and

00:07:06
you know, soccer balls and stuff like that.

00:07:08
He's old enough for that now. And every once in a while they

00:07:11
could hear like out of the corner of the room, a soccer

00:07:14
ball bouncing and you can actually see it.

00:07:16
It's straight up just bouncing by itself until it finally

00:07:19
settles on the floor. Stay still.

00:07:22
Also, there were sounds of trucks, like little toy trucks

00:07:26
that they were normally normally filled with pebbles and rocks

00:07:29
and stuff to play around. They would you, you could hear

00:07:32
them. And there was one time when this

00:07:34
got really creepy and it wasn't just Gabby experiencing this.

00:07:38
This is someone else. So by this time, right, it's

00:07:41
Easter, it's Easter time and it's a big deal in Colombia,

00:07:45
right? You have to it's like a Catholic

00:07:47
kind of thing. So you can only eat fish.

00:07:48
There's different traditions that you do right?

00:07:51
And Gabby's grandmother was there with her and at the house.

00:07:55
And one time they went out and when they were coming back, they

00:07:58
saw, they saw the grandmother just kind of looking very

00:08:01
uncomfortable standing outside, sitting outside.

00:08:05
They're like, what's wrong? And then she explains, hey, I

00:08:09
was in in near the kitchen and out in the courtyard.

00:08:13
I hear the sounds of balls bouncing around, plastic toys,

00:08:18
you know, being moved around. But the lights are off, so she

00:08:22
says hey, thinking that it's it's Gabby and the little

00:08:25
brother still there. But like, hey, you guys like,

00:08:28
turn on the light, like, what are you?

00:08:29
What the heck are you doing right?

00:08:31
But they still keep playing. She goes out to scold them.

00:08:36
She realizes that the courtyard is completely empty.

00:08:43
And it's what made made her think that, you know, all these

00:08:46
things that were happening maybe weren't bad or evil.

00:08:51
They were intending no harm. It was just sad, the ghosts of

00:08:55
children playing around in the courtyard by themselves in the

00:08:59
dark. Now this this house had wooden

00:09:04
walls that were so old and so cracked that you could see

00:09:08
through them. And there was one other

00:09:11
situation where this friend that was there, it turns out, First

00:09:15
off, the mother was pretty much taking classes at the library

00:09:20
because the technology that was around the area, it was kind of

00:09:23
lacking, right? So that they, they had no, they

00:09:25
didn't have a landline. So in order to learn, you know,

00:09:28
stuff about the Internet and everything, the mom was taking

00:09:31
night classes. One time this friend was over

00:09:34
over at the house and through the cracks the friend could see

00:09:39
there or could hear and kind of see the shape of this old woman.

00:09:42
I was praying and the whole time they felt like they were being

00:09:47
watched through the cracks of the walls.

00:09:51
So they started researching what could this have been and later

00:09:55
on as they start asking around, they find out that this elderly

00:09:57
couple had died in the House of cholera.

00:10:01
Unfortunately, all these thoughts of, hey, maybe this

00:10:05
thing is peaceful, this thing isn't going to harm us.

00:10:08
It's not doing anything to us. It's just this old lady and

00:10:11
little kids playing around late at night.

00:10:14
Nothing's going to go bad. Suddenly things start turning a

00:10:19
little bit dark. So one night they are at home

00:10:22
and all of a sudden all the lights go off, like they're

00:10:24
watching TV and everything just goes blank.

00:10:29
They hear a chair being dragged. It's hearing noises out there in

00:10:33
the middle of like imagine like the you're out there in in this

00:10:36
colonial old house. These noises aren't stopping,

00:10:40
right? It it's like violent.

00:10:42
Now things are are happening. Things are are the they're

00:10:44
freaking out. So the kids, they run outside.

00:10:47
They have no other choice. They're out there freaking out,

00:10:52
waiting for everything, like for everything to pass.

00:10:54
But the sounds are still happening.

00:10:56
Chairs dragging, noises in the kitchen, kind of like pots and

00:10:59
stuff. It's it's like violent.

00:11:00
It's like something going on and there's something's rattling,

00:11:03
kind of like an earthquake. The power comes back on and

00:11:06
everything goes silent. And that's when the support

00:11:10
comes in from the mother, right? The mom is like, yeah, something

00:11:13
weird's going on here. We need to get some help.

00:11:15
So they, they find these like what they call like white

00:11:17
witches, right? It's people that can offer

00:11:19
spiritual help around, around this house.

00:11:22
And she decides to like this person comes in and they they

00:11:25
stay over for the night. So as she's staying there,

00:11:28
she's, she mentions that she had her own experience at the house,

00:11:32
a presence being their footsteps being dragged.

00:11:35
Something is in that room, and she's like her.

00:11:38
Her final verdict is like, hey, you know what?

00:11:41
Something's here, and it's territorial and it doesn't want

00:11:44
me here, so I'm leaving. And she never went back.

00:11:49
So it's Easter night now, and Gabby's mom is praying.

00:11:56
Everything's quiet, doors are closed.

00:11:58
Everything's seems normal when all of a sudden it gets

00:12:02
strangely quiet, like something's about to happen.

00:12:08
And that's when they start to hear children playing outside in

00:12:12
the corridor. Toys are moving, things are

00:12:15
happening. The house is active now.

00:12:18
And everybody's kind of like staring at each other when all

00:12:21
of a sudden they start hearing heavy footsteps start

00:12:24
approaching. And then this loud voice, a male

00:12:29
voice saying stop praying. And they start hearing somebody

00:12:36
kicking at the door, like knocking on this door.

00:12:38
By the way, this door is barely held together by this like

00:12:40
silver latch. It's tiny.

00:12:42
And it's, they're just hoping that it's going to hold.

00:12:45
And as it's getting louder and louder and louder, they start

00:12:48
hearing these voices of the children playing and, and going

00:12:52
outside. It's kind of, you know, roaming

00:12:54
around. And they start fading slowly.

00:12:59
And the man or whatever that thing was that was outside goes

00:13:02
away. And that marks Gabby's most

00:13:07
terrifying night at that house. Later on, they started

00:13:12
investigating, searching around, and it wouldn't have happened at

00:13:15
this house. And they find out that there had

00:13:17
been a well out in the courtyard, but it was sealed.

00:13:20
And one thing that was strange is that nothing grew on top of

00:13:23
it no matter what, right? But then they find out that two

00:13:27
children had died there. They had passed away.

00:13:30
So they were not in peace, right?

00:13:32
Maybe because who, who knows, they might have been left there.

00:13:36
Maybe it's because it was such a tragic death that they could

00:13:39
never leave. When their souls are trapped

00:13:41
forever in that house, you know, the stories of that kind of

00:13:44
remain unknown, right? They later contacted a spiritual

00:13:48
group to to help them move on. But it was then that actually

00:13:53
marked the end of the family's time at that house.

00:13:57
Now, you would think that this would, this is the end of the,

00:14:00
of the story, right? But turns out years later, they

00:14:04
start, you know, the, the grandmother passes away and they

00:14:07
realize, you know, let's, let's get rid of the house.

00:14:09
So they're going to demolish it. And sad times, right?

00:14:13
When you, when you have a place like that with, with so much

00:14:15
history, it's just going to be gone.

00:14:18
So they start doing that and you know, the people that were

00:14:21
helping, you know, working on it, supposedly, the story goes

00:14:26
is that they found gold underneath the kitchen and it

00:14:32
supposedly was valued like at 5 million or something like that,

00:14:35
something like a huge amount. Now that would have been kind of

00:14:40
cool, right, to find gold at your house.

00:14:42
The thing was that they also found bodies in the walls.

00:14:50
I remember looking into this when I heard this story.

00:14:53
This actually happens. And it turns out there are a lot

00:14:56
of stories out there about Indigenous people practicing

00:15:00
that somebody passes away and they put them in the walls of

00:15:04
the houses. You know, they had sold the

00:15:06
house to a construction company. And there are there are things

00:15:11
that, you know, people say when, when when you find a house with

00:15:16
treasure in it or with secrets like bodies in the walls, that

00:15:20
you get cursed. So you kind of have to stop.

00:15:23
And some people actually believe that they will refuse to

00:15:25
continue construction if they find anything like that.

00:15:28
And I don't know if this was a coincidence, but they say that

00:15:31
that construction company went bankrupt after that.

00:15:36
The property, unfortunately, was just left abandoned.

00:15:43
So Gabby grew up, you know, after a childhood realizing that

00:15:47
there are spirits out there, that there are things, entities

00:15:51
that can roam around a property if they haven't finished

00:15:53
business. Things like, you know, dark

00:15:57
things like somebody pounding against your door to things like

00:16:01
little kids playing in the courtyard.

00:16:03
You know, there's good things, there's dark things, evil

00:16:06
things, things that shouldn't be there that people would normally

00:16:10
want to get rid of. But if I ever changed her

00:16:12
perspective of what's out there, and I feel like those of us who

00:16:16
have experienced paranormal things, events, our own

00:16:20
paranormal encounters, it changes your perspective in in a

00:16:24
really strange way that you don't feel the need to prove it

00:16:28
to anybody anymore. You just know it's real and you

00:16:31
accept it that way. Sometimes, unfortunately, the

00:16:36
only thing you can do when you encounter things like these are

00:16:38
are to, to leave. And I'm glad that's what the

00:16:41
family did. You know, the place where I'm

00:16:45
recording from right now, if you're watching on video on

00:16:49
YouTube or Spotify, this place was built under kind of similar

00:16:56
circumstances. When they were building out the

00:16:59
property, some of the people that were helping with the

00:17:03
construction said that they found pots of gold.

00:17:07
And The thing is, even though you know, you might be

00:17:10
completely poor and broke and gold might seem like, wow, you

00:17:16
just hit it big. A lot of these people refuse to

00:17:19
take that because you know what it means.

00:17:23
If you take that, you're going to be followed.

00:17:25
Something's going to affect you. The thing is that at this

00:17:30
property, it just not not even that long ago, out of my own

00:17:35
paranormal experience here, I was downstairs.

00:17:38
This is a 2 story place, right? I was downstairs, we were

00:17:43
watching TV and in the kitchen TV and all of a sudden, clear as

00:17:48
day, we're the only people in the house hear footsteps

00:17:52
upstairs. Boom boom, boom, boom.

00:17:57
The dog that was downstairs sleeping, she's this lazy dog.

00:18:02
She looks up and starts barking. Woof, woof, woof.

00:18:06
As I, as I get there, I'm like, what is she looking at?

00:18:11
I go upstairs and there's no one there.

00:18:13
The only people in the house, right?

00:18:15
And that's not the only thing. Like sometimes and, and people

00:18:19
say this like when they're downstairs, they hear footsteps

00:18:21
up in a clear footsteps, right? People moving around upstairs,

00:18:27
You know, am I terrified of being here, like with this swing

00:18:30
set behind me and this old abandoned kind of part of the

00:18:34
the property? Yeah, kind of freaking out.

00:18:37
There's no Wi-Fi here, so I can't really read any of the

00:18:40
comments that you say is I don't feel like, you know, I feel like

00:18:43
