What is the scariest movie of all time? Some might argue it's The Exorcist. Others say The Shining, or The Conjuring. For me, it was The Blair Witch Project and I'll tell you why, here in this episode. **SPOILER ALERT**
Also, why are witches so scary?

What's YOUR all time favorite SCARIEST movie ever?
00:00:00
Would you agree with me if I tell you that I think scary
00:00:04
movies are just not that scary anymore?
00:00:07
In 25 years of this one movie that I watched, only one other
00:00:12
series I would say has come close to like topping it, and it
00:00:16
still didn't quite get it. I don't know.
00:00:19
I don't know. I want to get your opinion.
00:00:20
I want you to tell me what you think the movie like the
00:00:24
scariest movie you've ever seen was and why, Because in this
00:00:28
episode, I'm going to be making my cakes for one of the
00:00:32
creepiest movies of all time. My name is Edwin and this is
00:00:37
Paranormal Club. You might already know that.
00:00:46
One of the things that creeps me out the most out of like all the
00:00:50
stuff, all the paranormal things that I research and read about
00:00:55
and watch and all that, the creepiest thing is witches.
00:00:59
Brujas is what I call right brujas.
00:01:02
Because you grow up talking to your uncles and your
00:01:05
grandparents and all this stuff. And when they tell you a scary
00:01:07
story, they tell you about witches, brujas, creatures,
00:01:11
people that have the supernatural powers and they
00:01:15
live out in the woods and they turn into birds and they can
00:01:18
turn into different things and they get kids out from the
00:01:22
street when they're out too late.
00:01:25
Do you imagine them? You see them, and then you have
00:01:26
all these movies confirming their existence.
00:01:29
But still, I think what makes them really creepy is that you
00:01:33
don't really see them. I remember a long time ago,
00:01:37
there's this show called Pretty Made Impacto.
00:01:40
My people know what I'm talking about here.
00:01:42
Like this. These things traumatized a
00:01:43
generation, right? There was one video that came
00:01:47
out of La Bruja de Monterrey, which was the witch of Monterey
00:01:53
of Monterey. And there's this thing that's
00:01:56
flying across the sky. Like there's this, there's a
00:01:59
park, right? It's like a national, like a
00:02:01
maybe not a National Park, like a just a, a park where like a
00:02:03
nature, people can go hiking there.
00:02:05
I don't know what you might call that, but they are like there's
00:02:10
a camera rolling and it's kind of pointing up to the sky.
00:02:12
There's rocky area around it and like there is this figure and
00:02:17
I'm notice I'm not doing this right.
00:02:19
I'm not like, horizontally flying across the sky, but like,
00:02:22
it's like, vertically, like sitting up or like standing and
00:02:26
just going across the sky. And this footage, like, made it
00:02:31
around the world pretty much because it, it was freaky.
00:02:37
It was a really creepy thing to see in the on TV, which you
00:02:41
assume is real. You have like, these two hosts
00:02:43
and they're always talking so seriously about everything.
00:02:45
And they're like, yeah, like there was this witch like La
00:02:48
Bruja de Monterrey is, and they start telling you all this stuff
00:02:52
and you're like, oh, man. Then there was a, a story in my
00:02:56
family that went around for a bit where there was a, a woman
00:02:59
who was said to turn into a ball of fire.
00:03:03
Really messed me up 'cause it's like you hear people saying
00:03:06
like, yeah, my mom's cousins and everybody talking about how they
00:03:11
witnessed this woman that turned into a ball of fire, flew down
00:03:15
the street and crashed against a tree.
00:03:18
And then the next day the woman was all beat up.
00:03:20
Like she looked like she was beat up because she had to hit a
00:03:23
tree when she was turning into a ball of fire.
00:03:26
And she was known around the town, you know, where you, you
00:03:28
would go to her and you would ask for things like, oh, I want
00:03:31
this person to suffer or oh, I want money.
00:03:34
And she would perform these rituals.
00:03:36
You know, I can tell you the full I think I've already told
00:03:39
you like the the full story, but I can always, you know, share it
00:03:42
again, maybe in some live or something.
00:03:45
But anyway, all these things to say that witches to me are
00:03:48
probably the creepiest things because they can be real, you
00:03:53
know, as in like they could actually exist because we just
00:03:56
don't know where they are, where they live, what they look like
00:04:00
necessarily. But you have people who swear
00:04:03
that they've seen one in their lifetime.
00:04:05
And these are people who you would believe, right?
00:04:08
So again, the creepiest thing. So you can imagine the movie
00:04:14
that I'm going to mention right now, actually, there's a lot of
00:04:16
movies about witches, but the one I'm going to be talking
00:04:18
about today is The Blair Witch Project.
00:04:23
Now, The Blair Witch Project. There's this going to be some
00:04:25
spoilers here in this episode. But even still, I think if you
00:04:29
weren't, you're not from the 90s and I think you just missed out.
00:04:33
Like it's been spoiled already. Like you, you won't get the 100%
00:04:39
effect of the movie. Like it's just because it wasn't
00:04:43
just like the movie. It was like the build up to it
00:04:45
and all the talk about it. That's what really got it.
00:04:50
It's kind of like the Exorcist. If you want to the Exorcist now
00:04:53
they're going to be like, huh, yeah, that's creepy.
00:04:57
Like you can see why it's like so creepy.
00:04:59
But at the time, it was such an unknown like taboo thing to talk
00:05:06
about the devil in or demons in this way.
00:05:12
So it just it was that for this movie, the Blair Witch Project,
00:05:16
it was that opportunity, the first of its kind to go really
00:05:19
big with a whole new way of telling stories.
00:05:23
I'll start off by telling you a little bit more about the movie,
00:05:26
then some things about, you know, some background
00:05:28
information on it and then some theories as to what happened.
00:05:33
So here we go. To start off right, The Blair
00:05:40
Witch Project was the story of three film students.
00:05:43
These are Heather. You have Mike and you have Josh.
00:05:47
Now, in the very beginning of this movie, which is kind of a
00:05:52
found footage type of idea, right?
00:05:55
You have people that are holding cameras and they're just kind of
00:05:59
checking them out. They're testing them out.
00:06:01
And this was supposedly footage that was found out in the woods
00:06:07
a year after these three students disappear.
00:06:10
And that's what we're watching now, right, 'cause in the very
00:06:12
beginning it says that 333 film people were dismissing went
00:06:19
missing in the woods and footage was found a year later.
00:06:22
This is what we found. And that's how the movie starts.
00:06:26
And this is taking place back in 1999, right?
00:06:28
So imagine like as in when it came out or some sometime around
00:06:32
there, and I want you to imagine a world without smartphones,
00:06:36
without Google Maps, without apps in general, without camera
00:06:41
phones, the GPSI think was around.
00:06:46
But I want you to think of what that is without the Internet
00:06:50
being so massive and and all that.
00:06:53
Like I want you to just kind of get yourself at that, right.
00:06:56
Cell phones are different, I guess just it's it's a whole
00:07:00
other thing, right. So you have these people that
00:07:04
led by Heather, the this woman who this like young woman who
00:07:07
wants to document, make a documentary about the Blair
00:07:12
Witch and this local legend. And it takes place in
00:07:15
Burkettsville for Burkettsville was called Blair and this takes
00:07:19
place in Maryland. So she starts investigating like
00:07:23
they, they they gather the the film starts with them getting
00:07:26
together. They go out and they start
00:07:28
talking about their plans to stay out in the woods for for a
00:07:31
couple days and then come back and they're just going to record
00:07:33
some things. Also talk to some of the locals
00:07:35
around the area and they're going to learn about the Blair
00:07:39
Witch and the legend about this entity that lives out in the
00:07:42
woods and that haunts a certain part of these these woods.
00:07:46
So they start interviewing people and this thing looks real
00:07:50
rightly. You have interview with a woman
00:07:52
who has like a child in the arm and that child is like
00:07:55
misbehaving, but the camera still rolling.
00:07:59
And they just keep it right. They keep the footage and just
00:08:02
saying, yeah, like, that's a really creepy thing.
00:08:03
Yeah, I've heard of that ghost. I I've heard of that, that wage
00:08:06
and I heard of those stories and they used to scare me like that.
00:08:10
And then they interview this other guy who says, yeah, you
00:08:12
know what? Like I heard of this before, but
00:08:15
and they start mentioning this other thing that happened out of
00:08:18
the woods, which was this killer that was killing children out
00:08:23
there and freaking out the whole town while they were, you know,
00:08:29
during during the during that time.
00:08:31
So this brings up the the idea, right?
00:08:34
Like this brings doubt into the legend of the Blair Witch.
00:08:38
So automatically us as watchers of this movie, they say, oh,
00:08:43
we're going to go explore this legend.
00:08:45
OK, cool. And then somebody mentions, oh,
00:08:48
you know, there was a killer out in the woods.
00:08:49
So it might be a reason why all the rumours started of children
00:08:54
disappearing out in the woods automatically.
00:08:57
We're like, oh, is it real? Is it not?
00:08:59
Kind of gives a validity as to why we're watching a
00:09:02
documentary, why anybody would watch a documentary made by
00:09:05
Heather. So it starts making sense,
00:09:07
right? But there are a couple of people
00:09:12
like there was this woman who lives out in the woods like a
00:09:15
hermit, basically. She just out by herself and they
00:09:19
ask her and she's like, yeah, I was out there once and I saw
00:09:24
her. This woman, she was covered in
00:09:27
like, she looked like a horse, like fur, like dark hair.
00:09:32
And she was wearing a cloak, like a, a shawl.
00:09:36
And she was just look really creepy.
00:09:39
And they recorded her supposedly, right?
00:09:43
And they start saying, well, maybe we shouldn't believe her.
00:09:46
Like she's she's a little weird. Like she says she's she's a
00:09:49
scientist and she's a ballerina. And like she says all these
00:09:52
things. So maybe we shouldn't believe
00:09:54
her. But either way makes it into the
00:09:56
footage because it's recorded, right?
00:09:58
This is pound footage. They keep interviewing people
00:10:01
like you finding out more about this stuff.
00:10:02
And eventually they go out into the woods and they have to stay
00:10:07
like for a couple of days. So they take their camping year.
00:10:09
There's three people, right? And they're going and they have
00:10:12
a map. Heather's kind of leading the
00:10:14
way. She's like, OK, let's, let's
00:10:15
record this. Let's record this other part.
00:10:18
Let's make it up to the cemetery part.
00:10:20
And then we'll just go back to the car.
00:10:23
While they're out there, they get lost and they kind of start
00:10:26
turning on each other. Like they have little fights
00:10:29
because Heather supposedly can't navigate.
00:10:31
Well, they have, they're cold, they're hungry, they're upset.
00:10:38
And eventually once they're like, they're so tired they
00:10:41
start hearing noises out at night, like children laughing
00:10:45
outside of their tent. They start hearing weird, like
00:10:50
snapping of branches out there. When they open the tent, they
00:10:55
see piles of rocks. Like imagine a triangle of piles
00:10:59
of rocks. Like, you have a pile, a pile
00:11:01
and a pile behind you. And in the middle of the tent,
00:11:06
you start seeing stuff like that.
00:11:08
And as they keep going, they find more weird things like this
00:11:13
voodoo. Like, imagine a stick figure
00:11:16
made out of sticks. That's the best I can describe
00:11:19
it. Imagine like a.
00:11:19
Yeah, I just imagine that. Yeah.
00:11:23
Like a figure of like a person, but made out of sticks.
00:11:26
And they're all hanging from trees.
00:11:28
Like, there's a lot of them and obviously they're freaking out,
00:11:31
right? Because at night they start
00:11:32
hearing all these noises. So they're they're freaking out.
00:11:34
There's they're like, what is that?
00:11:36
Who who is that? Eventually one of them goes
00:11:38
missing, right? And I think it, yeah, it's Josh.
00:11:41
Josh is the one that goes missing.
00:11:43
And then Heather finds this bundle of sticks out in front of
00:11:49
the tent. And when she opens it, because
00:11:52
it's like this, you can tell like it's wrapped in this cloth.
00:11:55
Turns out it's Josh's shirt. And then as she opens a little
00:12:01
like the bundle of sticks inside, there's this this
00:12:04
stained cloth thing. I guess this might be part of
00:12:08
the shirt. And in there there are teeth.
00:12:12
Like you can't see them that clearly anymore because of, you
00:12:14
know, the, the film quality and everything.
00:12:16
But supposedly it's like a finger teeth and like a tongue
00:12:20
or something. She's freaking out, right?
00:12:24
Obviously. So now it's just Mike and
00:12:26
Heather out of the woods. And now they start hearing
00:12:29
Josh's voice at night. And all this time they're trying
00:12:33
to get back to the car, but they they can't.
00:12:37
Because even though they when they were all three together,
00:12:40
they they went for a full day, 15 hours hiking in the woods in
00:12:45
the middle of nowhere. And then they found the exact
00:12:49
same spot where they had crossed.
00:12:51
So they just went in a circle and all along they were thinking
00:12:54
they were just going South. So imagine that, right?
00:12:57
Like you're freaking out. Obviously your mind's like,
00:12:59
what's going on? So anyway, they so now it's Mike
00:13:05
and Heather, right? And they start hearing Josh's
00:13:07
voice from out in the woods. And now it's night time and they
00:13:10
hear him and he's like screaming for help, calling their names
00:13:12
and stuff. So they go out and as they're
00:13:16
they're, they're going into the woods, they find this house,
00:13:18
like this abandoned house out there.
00:13:20
And it's like the creepiest thing you can imagine.
00:13:22
There's handprints, kids handprints on the walls.
00:13:27
They go in and you can tell, you know, Heather's like Mike don't
00:13:33
go in there. My like, she's just scared.
00:13:36
And Mike is just like, I hear him.
00:13:37
I hear him. He's like upstairs and Oh no,
00:13:39
he's downstairs. Dude.
00:13:41
I'm leading up to like right now to like the creepiest part, like
00:13:47
one of the most creepiest scenes I've seen in a movie.
00:13:52
And it happened to be the very end here.
00:13:56
They're going up like they're going down to the basement, not
00:13:58
going up, going down to the basement.
00:14:01
Now Mike's camera is completely off.
00:14:08
Heather's only one recording now, and she's making her way
00:14:11
downstairs and she sees Mike standing in the corner facing
00:14:16
the wall. And she's screaming.
00:14:21
My, my suddenly the camera falls and it ends.
00:14:30
That's it. That's the movie.
00:14:34
The credits roll. Now, I don't know what you what
00:14:40
you think of that, right? Because for now, if you were to
00:14:43
see that, if you have like a younger person saying that
00:14:46
they're going to be like, wait, what happened?
00:14:47
Like I want an ending to and then you have no idea how, how
00:14:50
often I hear this too with scary story podcast.
00:14:53
It's just like, I wanted, I want them to have an ending.
00:14:57
And I think that's what we're asking for, right?
00:14:58
We're asking for for the experience there, the the full
00:15:02
thing. But to me that was like, wait,
00:15:05
what, like this is found footage?
00:15:07
What happened? Well, why not?
00:15:09
Like, I don't know, the whole idea of it is what made it a
00:15:14
creepy thing. And This is why I feel like if
00:15:16
you were to watch it now, you would be like, that's just.
00:15:20
I mean, sure, yeah, it's creepy, but it's not like creepy like
00:15:23
The Conjuring or, you know, the the newest, the newest one or,
00:15:28
or whatever. But I would argue that because
00:15:33
there was way more than just a movie and this is where I want
00:15:36
to get into stuff that just it's kind of hard to to try it now.
00:15:40
And the the Smile movie, try to do it by having these like
00:15:44
creepy people smiling in like public events and stuff.
00:15:49
It's just not the same, you know, But still there was, I
00:15:54
would say First off, the ambience of the movie, The witch
00:15:59
or whatever this creature was or whatever was out there in the
00:16:02
woods was never shown. Now this just lived in your
00:16:05
mind. Do you remember that one movie?
00:16:07
What is this movie? Where is it Signs?
00:16:09
I forgot what movie it is where like there's aliens and you
00:16:12
don't see the aliens until you see one kind of going down the
00:16:16
alley. You know that I don't know if
00:16:18
you if you're like a movie person, you know what I'm
00:16:19
talking about. Well, for this, it was like
00:16:23
that. You never see the witch.
00:16:25
You never see the thing. And also there's no like music
00:16:28
in the, there's no like sounds design necessarily.
00:16:32
I mean, there's sound design, but it's not like there's no
00:16:34
music. There's no like a whole
00:16:38
elaborate movie here. It's just, it looks like just
00:16:40
shaky handheld footage and that's it.
00:16:44
So right there, we're forced to imagine the horror of like
00:16:48
what's out there and we're forced to because you have
00:16:51
silence. And I think that that's a very
00:16:55
powerful thing that we don't, we don't see nowadays because it's,
00:16:59
you know, we need it to retain our attention.
00:17:04
I guess we we need to, we need all those, all these effects and
00:17:07
stuff to keep us there tied. We need beats to a film.
00:17:11
We need like, OK, the first part is the resolution and then this.
00:17:15
And then they have all these parts to it.
00:17:17
And this is what, you know, when, whenever I, I, I tell
00:17:21
people about writing and the story, I'm always like, yeah,
00:17:25
there's a formula to it. I guess there's a formula that
00:17:28
works. You can see it in Pixar and
00:17:29
Disney, but it's not like, I don't know, is that really what
00:17:34
we want to do with a lot of the same stuff?
00:17:36
I don't know. I don't know.
00:17:37
It's, I guess I'd be the wrong person to ask.
00:17:41
Also, the realism. This is point #3 I guess I'm not
00:17:45
sure if we're keeping track, but point my, my next point here is
00:17:49
that just how real it felt Like you have people that are out of
00:17:54
the woods and they're scared and you can connect with them a
00:17:58
little bit because they're kind of losing it.
00:18:00
The thing is, when I started researching for, for this
00:18:04
episode, I was, I, I found out that a lot of the frustration
00:18:09
they were feeling was real because when they were
00:18:13
auditioning for the, you know, the actors were auditioning for
00:18:15
this, they were told if you're going to be out in the woods, if
00:18:18
you're not OK with being scared, just don't do this.
00:18:22
The reason is that a lot of it was improvised.
00:18:24
The the the script supposedly was 35 pages and they were told
00:18:29
they were going to improv a lot of this.
00:18:31
So they were just, you know, recorded in scenes, but like,
00:18:36
they had to improvise all the stuff.
00:18:39
So that means that, yeah, they were genuine, genuinely cold.
00:18:42
They were tired and they didn't eat that well while they were
00:18:46
out there. So imagine that recording like
00:18:49
that, like you would actually be pissed.
00:18:50
Like recording. Jeez.
00:18:53
So it really made it feel that way, right?
00:18:55
And also the the idea of like the recover tape and how this
00:19:00
was like the film itself was structured as a, hey, we found
00:19:06
this footage and I'm going to play it for you.
00:19:08
This is what we found. So a lot of it is like them like
00:19:10
recording themselves going out in the woods and how they're
00:19:13
like, oh, give me the 16 I need to catch this on the whatever
00:19:16
camera I need to like. And it's that that's what's
00:19:19
what's kind of made it real a little bit, but there was
00:19:23
something even more exciting with all that.
00:19:27
And this is where I feel like it's going to be really hard to
00:19:33
make it work again because their marketing strategy, I'm telling
00:19:39
you, like you, we can't remake this.
00:19:42
First off, the website, now the website itself was like of, of
00:19:46
this of, of the, the movie of the Blair Witch seemed like news
00:19:50
reports, pictures of stuff that happened, stuff that was found.
00:19:54
Like you have people that were analyzing tapes, like you could
00:19:59
see them like, and they even made a document, a mockumentary
00:20:03
about the Blair Witch and you can see them inspecting old
00:20:06
film, putting stuff together again, just really weird stuff
00:20:12
that makes you like, makes you think like, is this real?
00:20:15
They had news reports, they have reporters on television, police
00:20:19
reports saying that these three people went missing.
00:20:23
The search for it, you know, very interesting too, is that
00:20:26
even they say that some people that knew the parents of one of
00:20:32
the actors in there would sense letters or sent cards like
00:20:36
sympathy, like, hey, sorry, sorry this happened.
00:20:39
Sorry your child went missing because they thought it was
00:20:42
real. A lot of people thought it was
00:20:45
real. That's part of the part of the
00:20:48
magic here. There was so much stuff that
00:20:51
went into it, like so much effort that went into making us
00:20:55
believe that this was real, that they even put, you know, their
00:20:58
IMDb profiles for the actors. It they put in there that they
00:21:03
were missing and presumed dead. And it stayed that way for those
00:21:06
actors for like a year, like after the movie was was out.
00:21:10
So it really made you think like this was real.
00:21:12
And I remember this, like, thinking it was real, you know,
00:21:17
just like Paranormal Activity. I'm like, was it real?
00:21:20
And it did a really good job in making us believe that.
00:21:23
So it was marketed that way. And they even handed out missing
00:21:28
persons posters at festivals, like the movie festivals and
00:21:31
stuff. I mean, the yeah, when they were
00:21:33
watching all this stuff. So all of it, all of it was just
00:21:36
like, bizarre. Besides, back then, you know,
00:21:40
forums were a really big thing. And also e-mail chains.
00:21:43
I'm not sure if you ever got any of those, but like when they
00:21:46
said, oh, you know, send this to 10 people or you have 20 years
00:21:51
of bad luck or a year of bad luck or something.
00:21:54
I remember these. I used to try to start one and
00:21:56
never really took off. They're really creepy, some of
00:21:59
them at least, because people would add their own thing and
00:22:01
like, send it. So you would have these like
00:22:04
really, really, really long emails sent to a bunch of
00:22:06
people. It was just you kind of lost
00:22:08
your original album point. But they took advantage of that
00:22:12
like forums and all all these things.
00:22:14
They took advantage of the conversation of what happened,
00:22:18
how'd it go? And like they just just carry it
00:22:22
on. Like they just continued with
00:22:23
the lore of how this thing was real.
00:22:26
So you know, audiences, we weren't used to what we are now
00:22:32
a days. Like in terms of now, if
00:22:35
something comes out, we'll immediately go to Google.
00:22:39
If something somebody bullies us out on the bus, we'll record it
00:22:42
and let the crowd come in and, and take care of it.
00:22:46
You know, we use it to promote our businesses.
00:22:51
We use it to do a lot of you know, it.
00:22:53
It's a whole different era. Back then, you didn't question
00:22:56
things like this. You would just kind of look to
00:22:59
your sources that you trust people, you would e-mail people,
00:23:02
ask people. There was a whole a whole other
00:23:06
thing and This is why I feel like it can't be remade.
00:23:09
It can't be done again. I don't know.
00:23:14
Plus this style of movie, The style of storytelling really
00:23:20
just started a whole new legacy of storytelling and in movies,
00:23:25
which was a found footage and that could be real of movies.
00:23:31
And in a way, I feel like I've tried to do this with my
00:23:36
stories, you know, try to make it it one of my conditions is it
00:23:39
has to feel real at some level. So, you know, I don't know if
00:23:43
this is one of those influences that you don't think about until
00:23:45
you think about them again. Like you forget about them.
00:23:49
They're kind of living in your subconscious for for the longest
00:23:51
time. So it was, you know, just one of
00:23:55
those things where you can dive into a movie and believe it for
00:24:01
a little bit, kind of like when you were a kid.
00:24:05
And that's what makes it cool. Just so you could believe it.
00:24:07
You know, I don't think that now we can we can do a lot of that.
00:24:11
So the other movie that I mentioned earlier that came
00:24:14
close was Paranormal Activity. And I believe that movie.
00:24:18
And I think that's my condition for for me to think that, you
00:24:21
know, movies good or bad is did I believe it?
00:24:23
Did I go into the moment of here's where I'm living, Here's
00:24:28
the new reality I'm actually in in this now.
00:24:32
I think paranormal activity really made me wonder, like, was
00:24:34
it real because it was security footage inside of a house?
00:24:38
I don't know. But also, you know, it came out
00:24:41
similar things with like Cloverfield, the Leicester
00:24:44
Exorcism Host, you know, it, it really led the way.
00:24:50
And I feel like that can only be done once.
00:24:53
I don't know if another movie can top it, but I'm sure there
00:24:56
are like I'm sure there's movies out there that you can make
00:24:58
arguments for and be like, yeah, this is what really caught me.
00:25:02
And all these other movies of like the Terra Fire and Saw and
00:25:05
all these, they don't count. Like I don't really like that
00:25:08
style. It's just not, not my thing.
00:25:10
I know a lot of people like him, but for me, I'm just like, is it
00:25:14
really creepy or is it just blood?
00:25:16
You know, his blood is creepy. So also along with that is not
00:25:21
just only transform movies, but it also changed the way that
00:25:24
movies are marketed with real life things.
00:25:27
You know, like Paranormal Activity was kind of like that.
00:25:30
And also like like I mentioned earlier, movies like Smile or
00:25:34
what was that movie with like is it Megan?
00:25:38
That was actually kind of a creepy movie now that I think
00:25:40
about it. But anyway, it, I think the
00:25:46
reason why I liked it actually let me change the memory card
00:25:48
because I'm running out of space.
00:25:50
I need to, I really need to learn how to do all this.
00:25:56
All right. I just need to switch the memory
00:25:57
card. I'm still learning, you guys.
00:26:00
I'm still learning. Anyway, so this movie, I think
00:26:06
sure, yeah, it did a great job in marketing, did a great job in
00:26:09
storytelling. But what was my favorite part
00:26:13
and all this was just the atmosphere of how it was, right?
00:26:17
You have a setting, you have people in trouble, they're
00:26:21
trying to sort it out and it's just slowly building up like one
00:26:25
thing over the other. And it's just getting creepier
00:26:28
and creepier with a baseline of there is a witch that lurks
00:26:33
around these forests. Imagine that.
00:26:38
It's just like the typical haunted house story, right?
00:26:40
Like, how do you make a, a really creepy haunted house
00:26:42
story? We've seen this done right,
00:26:45
obviously, but with all all these elements of, you know what
00:26:51
we're used to like jump scares and like creepy things popping
00:26:55
up left and right. It's hard.
00:26:57
But like imagine a haunted house story now where it's just
00:27:00
building up like that, kind of like the Shining, right?
00:27:03
The Shining did that, but except there was a hotel, But I mean,
00:27:06
it did that. It was a build up of creepy
00:27:08
things that were going on around this place.
00:27:12
Just, I don't know what is it? I know it's makes me sound
00:27:14
really, really, really old. You know, when I, when I think
00:27:17
about it this way. But things have changed.
00:27:21
And I'm not saying they got worse, right?
00:27:23
Like they, they just, they're just becoming a lot more of the
00:27:27
same. And I know, I think that it
00:27:29
might not be just the nowadays phenomenon.
00:27:32
I think it's just as you grow older, you start seeing so many
00:27:35
more things that you, there's a lot more to compare.
00:27:38
And the more you compare, you realize that a lot of it is kind
00:27:41
of the same, you know, so everything that's older just
00:27:44
feels different, even though back then probably people were
00:27:46
saying the same thing. So, you know, just to, to you
00:27:50
can use that to argue with me a little bit.
00:27:52
But eventually they, I took some notes here and this is what I'm
00:27:55
looking at. But they actually studied a lot
00:27:59
of this in film schools and it became a whole thing where you
00:28:02
can study the way that this was marketed.
00:28:05
Because this film, they had like $60 in a budget for it.
00:28:11
I think eventually they reached more like 300 or 250.
00:28:16
They don't really say exactly, but it ended up making almost or
00:28:20
around $250 million in the end, you know, after all that.
00:28:26
So there was a good, good deal, right?
00:28:31
It obviously worked. It worked for me and it still
00:28:33
has. I think nowadays it still has a
00:28:35
strong cult following. There's still a lot of people
00:28:37
that debate the theories as to what happened or like why was
00:28:42
this guy standing in the corner like that.
00:28:46
Now there's AI, don't really get too into it.
00:28:50
I don't like getting into Internet fights anymore.
00:28:53
But if you've seen the movie, if you've seen the Blur Witch
00:28:57
project, the first one, the original Blur Witch project and
00:29:00
not the sequels or you know, the remakes or whatever, I want to
00:29:05
know what your theories are. This is where we're going to get
00:29:07
into some spoilers. And and if you end up watching
00:29:10
it because of this, I want you to tell me what what you thought
00:29:13
of this, right? Here's my theory first, then you
00:29:15
tell me yours. At the very end, you have, you
00:29:20
know, Josh disappears. They go looking for Josh and
00:29:22
they go into that house that I mentioned, right?
00:29:25
Mike is looking for him. He goes downstairs and he's in
00:29:28
the basement and he's standing looking in the corner.
00:29:33
And I think that's one of the key points.
00:29:35
This is one of the one of the arguments that people make too,
00:29:38
because earlier in the movie, they're interviewing a guy who
00:29:42
says that the killer would make kids stand in the corner and
00:29:47
face the corner, face the wall while he killed the others.
00:29:50
And this is actually what happened at the very end of the
00:29:53
movie, right? If you can assume that because
00:29:55
we don't really know. Mike is looking at the corner
00:30:00
and then other character basically drops dead.
00:30:05
What would you assume drops out because she was just never seen
00:30:07
again. And you know, it's it's for me,
00:30:12
it was difficult not to connect it.
00:30:15
I don't know if it was too obvious or I don't know why
00:30:18
there was debate about it. But then when I saw there was
00:30:19
debate, I'm like, wait, why? Why is it not the killer?
00:30:24
Because in the end, it's not really the witch is the killer.
00:30:28
What the heck? You know, I don't know.
00:30:32
Did the witch ever exist? There's all this lore about it.
00:30:37
Supposedly she's like from the 1800s.
00:30:40
There was a witch out there in the woods and there's articles
00:30:43
and there's supposedly a book about it.
00:30:44
Like again, this is in the movie lore movie as in like the she
00:30:49
gets a she has the Heather has a book that talks about the thing
00:30:53
that the event that happened back then.
00:30:56
Again, this goes deep, right? Like this is like there's
00:30:58
newspaper article, there's all this stuff about it, all this
00:31:00
information about the witch. Like I said, even the Sci-fi
00:31:03
channel that had a document mockumentary about the blur
00:31:07
witch a whole made-up thing that seems so real and I'm serious.
00:31:10
Anyway, let me know what you think about that.
00:31:14
Let me know what you think of my theory.
00:31:15
Let me know if you've even watched that movie.
00:31:18
But I want to know like again, this is I'm not a big movie
00:31:21
watcher. I want to start watching more
00:31:23
movies, but I'm not I'm not into like the whole thing now, but I
00:31:28
think the last movie I saw actually was here.
00:31:30
It was a an Indian movie and it was about a haunted, it was a
00:31:35
family that haunted a house and they need to get revenge because
00:31:39
of something that happened. So it was, it was really funny
00:31:42
watching it just the way that it was dramatized.
00:31:44
It was really cool. I watch it till the end.
00:31:46
It took me like 45 minutes, maybe like half an hour to like
00:31:50
realize you can turn on the captions on the TV and the.
00:31:55
So yeah, I missed a lot of it, but I I got the gist of it was
00:31:58
really interesting. So I really want to start
00:32:01
watching more movies. So send me your your movie
00:32:03
suggestions. I think all those things are
00:32:05
super interesting to like how so much work goes into a story.
00:32:08
Like they're like this story is good enough for a movie and then
00:32:10
they make it into a movie and spent millions of dollars making
00:32:13
it happen. I don't know, it's just such an
00:32:16
interesting thing. But anyway, so that concludes
00:32:19
the whole movie thing here. And it's still going to be
00:32:22
awkward when people ask you about my favorite movies because
00:32:26
sure, The Blair Witch Project is there, but I always say
00:32:28
Paranormal Activity is one of my favorites 'cause it's more
00:32:30
recent and people actually know what I'm talking about 'cause
00:32:33
they spread these movies out. But I know a lot of you are into
00:32:38
movies. I know you watch a lot of movies
00:32:40
and I know you watch a lot of series.
00:32:41
And I want to know you watch a lot of shows, so and listen to a
00:32:44
lot of stuff too. So I want to know, I want to
00:32:46
know what you're listening to. I want to know what you're up
00:32:48
to. Because for the longest time
00:32:51
podcast was just like this podcast specific.
00:32:53
Actually all podcast, we're generally just a person talking
00:32:57
into a microphone, not even a camera, a microphone and people
00:33:00
commenting or sending an e-mail every once in a while and now
00:33:03
actually get to see comments. So I'm like hungry for him.
00:33:05
I'm like, give me more. I want to know what you're
00:33:07
thinking. I want to know what you're
00:33:08
watching. Actually, I have some comments
00:33:10
that I'm going to go through right now just in, in the spirit
00:33:15
of getting you guys to, to send me thing.
00:33:18
I by the way, I appreciate all, all of you have commented on on
00:33:21
the stuff on Spotify left your reviews on Apple.
00:33:24
I'm, I'm still a little embarrassed about the whole
00:33:26
launching a new show like this 'cause we have so many, but this
00:33:29
is a little different 'cause it's obviously it's video and
00:33:32
it's more this video if you're listening to it, you're
00:33:34
listening to it obviously just on Apple podcast or you know,
00:33:36
the platform, but if you're on Spotify or YouTube, this is a
00:33:39
video. So people are commenting and I'm
00:33:44
like, whoa, like this is super cool.
00:33:46
I wasn't expecting this like I don't know, it's just it's
00:33:49
really cool, but I did I do have some comments here for you from
00:33:53
you on our latest episode. This one comes from cat 20.
00:33:59
It says OMGI, love this for you. I've been listening to your
00:34:02
Scary Story podcast for years now and this is exactly what
00:34:04
I've been saying you should do. And I appreciate that because I
00:34:11
knew I should have been doing this.
00:34:12
And I I remember getting a few ideas like, hey, you should try
00:34:17
this. Just try going doing this style
00:34:20
kind of more YouTube, more video style.
00:34:23
And I'm like, yeah, that'd be really cool.
00:34:24
Never got around to it. It was it just, it felt like,
00:34:27
again, building out the atmosphere for a story is so
00:34:30
much easier with audio to for you to imagine something because
00:34:33
it's like you have to imagine it with video.
00:34:36
It's a little more difficult, but still doable, right?
00:34:39
People still do it obviously, so thanks a lot for that.
00:34:42
By the way, K20, Paitlin Peyton, sorry, not Paitlin Peyton says.
00:34:48
I've been listening for approximately 2 hours just these
00:34:51
videos because I just found you all and I really like this.
00:34:54
Keep it up. Heart, heart, heart.
00:34:58
Thank you, Peyton. This is is great.
00:35:01
Yeah, it's funny because it's like I've been listening for
00:35:03
years and then you have somebody's listening for two
00:35:05
hours, which is everybody's welcome here.
00:35:07
See, we have new people. You have you have our, our our
00:35:09
people have been here for a long time.
00:35:11
And it's a really good mix of our community here that we have
00:35:14
going. Blanca says thank you for the
00:35:19
mention. How about how about interview
00:35:21
another one of my favorite shows, Real Ghost Stories
00:35:23
podcast with Tony Bruschi. I think that'd be really cool,
00:35:26
actually. Listen to Real Ghost Stories and
00:35:29
I also listen to a few, a few 'cause they have their own
00:35:31
little circle of podcasts and I think it'd be really cool to
00:35:34
have have them on here and just talk about, you know, ghost
00:35:38
stories or something. That'd be really cool.
00:35:40
Another comment here, Elisa James says, I love your podcast.
00:35:44
I love scary stories. I do too.
00:35:46
Well, I love scary stories and thank you for saying that you
00:35:48
love the podcast 'cause I have a lot of fun doing it.
00:35:51
So thanks a lot, Elisa. And then Kaylee says love, love,
00:35:55
love. And then a heart faced emoji
00:35:58
says, you're part of my weekly routine.
00:36:00
Now. I love tuning into Paranormal
00:36:03
Club to start my week. Great podcast, keep it up.
00:36:06
And I think that's what does it for me here, Kaylee.
00:36:09
Like I think we should go on Mondays every single day to
00:36:13
launch paranormal. I mean every every single day.
00:36:15
If they say that every single week, we should launch our
00:36:18
episodes on Mondays. That's actually where we're
00:36:20
going to be settling. Monday releases every week.
00:36:25
If there's any exceptions or anything, I feel like we're
00:36:28
gonna I don't know, I'll let you guys know, but I think that
00:36:32
concludes it for now. Thank you so much for your
00:36:34
comments and for your reviews and subscriptions.
00:36:36
You know, signing up for the, you know, the free follow tap
00:36:39
button on the on your app that lets you know when new episodes
00:36:42
come out. So we didn't do a full launch
00:36:44
for it. I don't know if you noticed, but
00:36:45
we didn't do like our whole hey, listen to us.
00:36:49
We're new park and if that's coming up a little bit later,
00:36:51
but I feel like it's because it's still like I don't know
00:36:54
what I'm doing. But either way, you know, I
00:36:58
appreciate you guys coming by and checking out the podcast.
00:37:01
Thank you so much for listening everyone.
00:37:04
This has been so far. We're taking shape.
00:37:07
Everything is going looking good.
00:37:08
So thanks again. Thank you very much for
00:37:10
listening. Keep it scary everyone.
00:37:13
See you soon.
