Something is Following Me: The Disturbing Sequel to a Family Haunting

Entities that you thought were watching out for you might not be what they seem.
In this scary story, Corey updates us from our last episode called Checking Up On Me (https://truescarystory.com/episode/checking-up-on-me) with a terrifying realization: something appears to be following him. A series of unfortunate events, some of them tragic, seem to be tied to something that he cannot explain. The events are continuing to this day.

You might remember Corey from one of our last stories, one where he thought that these entities that were visiting him were his family members. But after a new series of events, he's beginning to doubt that's the case. My name is Edwin, and here is Corey's true scary story. My name is Corey Gordon. I live in Alabama. I have couple years ago released a podcast about how I thought I had things going on in my life how I thought they were about basically my family looking over me and watching me making sure I'm doing good lately I think things have changed for the worst I don't really think personally it is my family anymore After I did the podcast, things got crazy. First, we had an anniversary party after the podcast. That's when we had little sensor pumpkins and everything set up. They started going off by themselves literally a week after the podcast was aired. Doorknobs not turning. I'm thinking somebody's coming into my house and doors locked and nobody's outside. So that's when it started to amp up a little bit. Weeks went by, years went by, nothing really happened as much. Me and my wife moved on, started living our normal lives. What really started making me think that something was wrong, we started getting in fights more often. It was very small things. After the podcast, our Christmas tree we bought, our cats chewed through the cord. We just ended up getting in a big fight about it out of no reason, no reason at all. And then we would just stop and look at each other and go, why are we fighting? And as soon as the fight would stop, things would take off in my house. The first thing that started to take off was about, because after that fight, I would hear my wife's voice in my house. She never called me by my name. It's always baby. I would gradually just be upstairs, be off. My wife is at work. I would be upstairs and just hear, baby. My wife's voice just called me from the house. I'd go downstairs, only to find out my wife was not home. She's still at work. Things only escalated personally at that point. Me and my family started having issues. From that point on, we have been no contact. And it seems like once that happened, I started hearing my wife's voice in my house. I have a friend who I asked about that. I was like, hey, I hear my wife's voice call me, call baby. First thing he told me was, do not answer this. If you hear your wife's voice and she's not home, don't answer it. And my answer was back to him, I already have. And I was told I welcomed it in at that point. He said, I basically welcomed in the spirit because I answered back to it. Once I heard, once it used my wife's voice and I answered back, he said, that's you starting communication with it. Basically welcoming, telling it that, hey, he answers to you and bringing it closer to me. It happened a lot. Honestly, still to this day, I will be at work and I'll hear, my wife's voice or I'll hear somebody call my name and I'll turn around and nobody's looking at me. There's nobody wanting me. I can ask everybody, hey, did you call my name? And they go, no. But I still, plain as day, just hear somebody call my name out of nowhere. But it happens more so at my house with my wife's voice. From that point on, it was mainly that, seeing shadows, hearing things happening. Through the house, my wife never believed me. She never had it happen to her. So it was more along the lines of, it's your ghost. Your ghost is messing with you. I got a new job at a movie theater. Things started escalating more at home. And I was like, hey, I worked till, at my job, I'd work till one or two o'clock in the morning, letting the last movies let out. My wife was fine with it. She'd do her thing. I'd do my thing. Working at the movie theater, things followed me there. Nothing would ever happen until everybody would leave except for one theater that's playing last. And I had to close. So I had to make sure all the doors were open to the theaters that were closed. Make sure everything shut down. And I would hear doors that I would open would shut. They're magnetized to the wall. So once you push them shut, they stayed shut or they stayed open. Once I opened them up, they would shut on their own through the hallway. I would hear people in theaters. Nobody's in the theaters. They're shut down. The two things that happened to me the worst at that job was me and my wife. What started it was through circumstances, we found that we were pregnant. I haven't really told anybody this, but we, through the months of her mom being pregnant, we lost our child. I think that's honestly where Things amped up the most because of negativity behind that of me feeling bad about it, my wife feeling bad about it. It just amped everything up until the point to where I feel like things happened here and my job at that point. And I connect those two together now because there was one night I worked at the theater closing by myself. Everybody's already left. Theater's empty, just me. I have to walk through the whole movie theater, projector room, the hallways, theaters. And I know my manager that's with me left. So I go upstairs, check everything, and I see someone in the very end of the projector room, which is a long, dark hallway with just projectors. The lights are off. I see a shadow moving and somebody stand up. I flip on the light going, hey, why are you still here? Nobody's there. And as I turn around, I hear my wife's voice call my name. It's not my name, but it's, like I said, it's just baby. I freeze, and that's when I realized, going through all of this, I felt that at that point, this wasn't someone from my family watching over me. I feel like it's more so something bad beating off the negativity in my house. Negativity of what I have and what I feel. Because it seems to grow when bad things happen. We get in an argument, things happen. We've lost our child. We're both in a very bad place. It just only seems to feed off that and amp up during those times. A while later, I leave that job. I get a new job. I have to travel a lot. Sleeping in hotel rooms are never fun. I get woken up middle of the night in hotel rooms. Still the uneasy feeling. I make it back home, spend time with my wife like normal. And I get tired of being away and job shuts down. They cancel all of our jobs. So I'm home for a while. Depressed, no job because my position shut down. Again, things amp up. That's when... My dogs started getting into it with, I guess you would say, the spirit. It's almost like my dogs at that point have a French Bulldog and a pit bull Shih Tzu mix. They're very protective of my wife, but they would bark at nothing. And when you think barking at nothing, they're barking at a wall. Or I would wait for my wife to get home, and they would run to the front door barking because the doorknob jingled. Like somebody's trying to come in and nobody's outside. Or they would run upstairs because I heard my bedroom door try to open. And my wife's obviously at work. Just things like that started happening, more so, while I was going through this depression with everything going on. And it stayed that way for a good amount of time. My wife started noticing things happening around the house at that point, too. She vapes. So one day she would go, hey, have you seen my vape? No, I don't use your vape. I don't know where it's at. And it would magically reappear in a bathroom or in our downstairs kitchen. My things would start to disappear. It's almost like you hear of a lot of people saying spirits want to be playful and mess with you. They take things. And I would literally... I had to scream in my house to get something back. For example, I had a Roku remote we used for our upstairs TV and for the downstairs TV. I used it one night, put it on my nightstand. where it easily goes, woke up with it gone. I can't find it anywhere. I've literally moved my bed. I've done everything to try to find it. At one point, I literally just go, give me my remote back. I'm tired of things disappearing. I'm tired of the games. I want my stuff back. Now, And one day I went to, about two days later, I went to redo our covers, wash our sheets, and the Roku remote showed up underneath the covers at the foot of my wife's bed. She would have felt it underneath her feet, I would like to think. Or I would have felt it. We would have both kicked the remote. But it's perfectly placed sideways at the very bottom of her bed underneath two sheets of covers. I've personally moved the sheets before her. to clean them. The Roku remote was not there. My thought process was, between the two times I've cleaned the sheets, how did that remote wind up underneath our covers? Because since it's been gone, I would have found it. It started doing little things like that. We would lose, my wife would lose her vape. I would lose the remote. Bottle caps off of bottles. We would drink a Gatorade. Bottle top would disappear until a week later, I'd find it in the kitchen. I don't know how it wound up there. It started dying down a little bit after that. I got a new job. I had to work night shifts starting out. So I'd get off at nine o'clock. My wife would work morning shifts, but she would stay up a little bit to see me before I got home. So we'd spend a little time together. It went very well. Things seemed to pick up a little bit and things were happier. I didn't see as much activity. And my wife texts me one day Before I got off, it was around 8.30 when I was still on night shifts before I moved to day shifts. She said, your ghost needs to stop. I didn't know what she meant. I thought, oh, it moved something again or it opened a door, which has happened with our pantry multiple times. The door would just, it'd be opened in the morning. I thought it was something small. I got home that night. My bedroom door was locked. So I banged on the door to get in. My wife's sitting on the bed with a, let's just say protection. She got protection from a car and she's sitting there with it loaded because she told me she believes now and something was in her house while I was going to work. She, she's not a very, she doesn't like spotlight on her. So she's given me her permission to tell her part of the story, if that is okay. From her story, she was off. resting in bed, she heard noises from downstairs and she thought it was just the animals. We do have cats. And as she was laying on the bed, relaxing, she heard footsteps starting to come up our stairs. And it was loud enough to where someone was almost trying to sneak upstairs to our bedroom. And it got to the point to where she heard the steps come from the very bottom of our stairs and to where our living room is, to right in front of the door of our bedroom. She was sitting upstairs with the dogs, and both our animals' fur went up on the back of their necks, and they ran straight to our bedroom door. So my wife immediately thought somebody was in our house. Somebody is breaking into our house. I hear footsteps. Our dogs are freaking out, wanting to bite somebody, to the point where their fur is up, and they're showing teeth. My wife gets up. scared to death, opens a bedroom door to nobody standing there. And both our dogs race downstairs and are just barking. But the way she described it as if they were, if somebody was here, they would have bit them. And she realizes her protection is downstairs on our kitchen table. So she slowly makes her way downstairs and, looking around corners just to make sure nobody's there because all she can find at the point in time is a wrench that I use to fix something upstairs. And she peeks around the corner of our stairs. Nobody's here. Still hearing the dogs attacking something, going after something in their kitchen. She walks into the kitchen and nobody's here. They're barking at a wall. She's, of course, confused, scared. She's, for her first time, has a experience what's going on with me and she checks every bedroom every door laundry room kitchen looks outside checks our bathroom there's not a single person in our house and all the doors are locked so once she finally had the dogs calmed down enough to go back upstairs she went upstairs kept all every light on in the house and locked herself in our bedroom until i come home an hour later And when I come home, the first thing she told me was, I believe you. At one, one part of me was happy. I'm finally validated in what's going on. The other part of me is partially mad because as a husband, you would want to stop what's happening to your wife. You would not want your wife to go through this issue. Wife, girlfriend, partner, you wouldn't want them to be scared and you would want to find a way to fix it. But with what's going on, there's no way to fix it. You have to live with it and you have to just hope it doesn't happen again because I can't do nothing as a husband. I can't do nothing to protect her against something I can't protect myself against. And I think that was probably the moment to where I fully realized I don't think this is my family anymore. I've heard stories of spirits acting like they're part of your family. They make you feel calm, and they're not. This is a feeling that I have now. Even now, after all that, I don't feel like whatever is here is here for good intentions. I feel like, A, it feeds off our negativity of the house. Between the random fights, the depression we had of losing a child, between the depression of me losing my job, suddenly, I feel like it feeds off that. I just don't think is a good thing anymore. I don't know if it was pretending to be, but it's bad when you don't feel, you feel happy about something being around you, knowing that, oh, my family is here to look after me. And it goes from that to a feeling of dread. One day I was off work and my wife was supposed to be home. I heard a noise outside. I lost my wife pulling up. I hear a knob jingle like it's locked because I keep my doors locked after a situation that happened. So I unlock it, open the door, and my wife's not there. Both my dogs are excited to see mom home. Somebody should be out there. They're barking. Mom's home. Not a single person out there. Before I shut the door, two seconds later, my wife pulls up and asks me, why am I looking outside the door? It's that weird moment of, okay, I heard the doorknob jingle. Like you were trying to get in, I heard a car stop outside my door. And within one second, she pulls up. It's almost like a, I don't know, it's almost like something was, hey, she'll be home in a second. Go ahead and open up the door. That's happened the past couple weeks. I've pulled up to my house many a times. I have a man cave, second story, opposite of my bedroom. It faces out from where I park my car. Lately, about every once a week, I'll pull up and I'll see a curtain that I have move to the side, almost like somebody's waiting for me to get home. As soon as I pull up, I'll see the curtain go back to normal. It's almost like somebody has it pulled to the side, watching me get out of my car. Mind you, nobody's home. My mother-in-law works till 5.30. My wife works till about 4, 4.30. I live five minutes from my job, so I get off at four. I'm home at 4.05. Who's in my house when nobody else is home to move a curtain? Especially in a room that's locked off on both sides. And the latest thing that's happened was actually tonight. I wanted to get this part, second part of my story out because things have changed and The last two weeks have honestly been hell. I haven't slept more than, oh God, I'd say on an average night, I get about four hours of sleep. Because ever since I've reached the feeling of somebody grabbing my arm to gently wake me up in the middle of the night, and I'll wake up to my wife asleep beside me. And it's happened numerous nights. I've had terrible nightmares. I have ask my wife if she was the one waking me up. And her answer is, I kiss you goodbye on your shoulder before you probably for work. And you don't even move. 99% of the time that I get shaken awake, I'll look and she's there. Or like this morning, I'll get shaken awake. And it's an hour before my alarm about every time it happens i'll look over at my side my wife's gone so she's already at work like this morning i was asleep somebody grabbed my arm and shook me trying to wake me up almost like a hey get up i sit up in bed my wife's already gone It's almost like I'm fighting for sleep at this point, to the point where my wife looked at me about an hour ago and said, hey, you have black lines under your eyes. Are you okay? No, I'm not okay. I can't sleep because something keeps waking me up. It's not you, but ever since I've agreed to do this part two, I have been woken up every night. Something is just waking me up every night, and it just won't let me rest. The last thing that happened before I actually started this podcast, I'm talking to my wife in the kitchen. And mid-conversation, I see a head and shoulders peer from behind her out of one of the doorways of our kitchen. I run into the living room to try to see what's going on. Is there somebody in there? Because I see head and shoulders look around the corner at me. And there's not a single thing in our living room. Even the dog's hair is on there. standing up on their backs, almost like they know something's there that I cannot see. I'm to the point now of me and my wife's discussed that we work Sundays, but Wednesdays we're going to try to start going back to church. I just need something to see if I can find something to help change this. Because as of the last podcast I did, if you want to call it part one, I was happy knowing something is looking out for me, possibly my family members, watching me grow, watching me be married and have a life. And within a month from doing the podcast, it's just escalated to the point to where I don't feel like, I don't feel like it's my family anymore. I feel like something is, I feel like something's more negative here now, possibly trying to act like my family, get closer, but I would like to find somebody to answer my questions, and find out more to see if I actually need to expunge this from my life and from my house. Not only to protect me, but to protect my wife, because I would not want her to go through what she went through again. I would rather take it full front than to have her be scared in her bed, having to lock her own bedroom door to make sure nobody come into her bedroom. Like I said tonight, my wife's like, you look like you're tired. I'm like, I am exhausted. It's almost like I'm being beat down, if that makes any sense. It's almost like whatever is here wants me to be exhausted to the point of giving up, but I'm not giving up. I do believe, honestly, that some people's family members do come by. Like, honestly, from as of last time, we talked about my prom picture. And I sent you the photo with my family and my grandparents in the photo. I believe your family can visit to check up on you. But also now, I don't think whatever's attached to me, because evidently it's attached to me because it's came, like I said in my last story, it's come from my house with my family to here. I don't think it's Good. I don't think your family would attach to you, but your loved ones. Now, technically, the story with Corey ended here with his updates from the last time that we actually recorded. But then he started telling me about something else, something that gets a little more serious. We'll let him continue. You can add it to the story if you want to. But the one time where I realized something was wrong, bad, was We, in the downtime between jobs, I already had it planned. I said, we have a little area beside our house. We were going to put chairs out there for a grilling area and build a canopy. So I bought a canopy outside. I literally had it built in the downtime I had between jobs. I was like, I have something to do. I can build this canopy. Metal, black canopy, overhanging all of our furniture. It looked really nice. We had a bad storm come through Alabama. about two months ago when it happened, and we got to use the canopy once. I looked outside during the storm, and it had pushed the canopy over, bent it. And my wife's like, it'll be fine. We'll just bend it back. It'll be okay. I'm like, okay. I'm usually a calm person. I don't let anything get to me. I've never raised my voice at my wife, and we've known each other for going on 20 years now, we had another night, the next, and I set it back up, the next day, we're both off alone, together in the house, having a great day, perfect day, storm hits again, because there's back-to-back storms, I see the canopy fly past the window, it's just broken at this point, and I run outside in the rain, my wife runs outside, and In my head, she wants to pick it up and try to move it. So in my head, I'm telling her through the rain, I got it. Don't worry about it. I got it. And evidently, for some reason, I thought I was being calm about it. And I see her get up, go inside the house. So I just think nothing about it. I put it back up. I'm good. I come inside to my wife being gone. She's upstairs. And she's in tears because I just screamed at her at the top of my lungs, like in anger at her for trying to help me with this canopy. I've never screamed at my wife before in my life. And it got to the point where it brought me, it broke me down. I literally started crying in our kitchen because of how bad I felt afterwards. And this is about when, after I lost my job and things started moving like amplifying started getting worse and it was before my wife had her experience so she didn't believe me and I'd be at home by myself with just this stuff happening and that's not me I have about 20 people you could ask anybody around me it's Corey someone who would snap and scream at his wife and 99% of them would go oh no he's scared of his wife there's no way he'd do that because I am I love my wife but she's 5'2 and Since I've known her, I've been scared of her. I love her to death. She's mean, but she's not mean to me. She doesn't put up with anything. So for me to, without knowing, no thought process in my head, no recollection of even the moment of me screaming at my wife in the rain over a broken canopy to the point to where she did not want me to touch her for at least 24 hours. I just know that's not me. and I don't know where it came from, but it's almost like, it's like I told her, it's almost like I wasn't myself, and that's what really scares me about what's going on here, because you've heard so many stories of possession, let's not wish it upon myself, but bad things happening, where you get broken down, and you're depressed, and the people are not the same at that point in time. You hear of, he was the nicest person in the world, and His attitude just changed. And honestly, that was me that day. And I've tried to black it out of my mind. That's why I didn't mention it earlier. But part of me feels like that was something going on with me in this house with whatever is following me here and latched on to me because I could have somebody scream in my face and I don't say a word about it. Oh, she told me she goes the next day. She was like, you were not yourself at all. That's not you. That's not the man I married. You've never raised your voice to me ever. And you just, like I said, she said, I didn't see myself doing it. It's weird how to me, I just said, I got it. Don't worry about it. Let me get it. It took at least 24 hours for her to actually hug me and go, are you okay? Say I was because that's been months ago. And still to this day, I'm almost haunted by what I did and I didn't know I did it. It's almost like I was possessed in that moment and I just snapped and I didn't realize I did snap. Do I love my mother-in-law? No, but she was here. She came in the door and I talked to her. She saw me and how bad a shape I was. And she's like, that's not you. You wouldn't have done that. I'm like, but I did. Do I know what I did? No. But at the same time, you may agree. I don't know if you're married, but as a husband, you have to, I did that. I may not have meant to, but I did do that. And take responsibility for something that you didn't even do. Because to this day, I do not remember screaming at her. Corey, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us here at True Scary Story. I also want to say... sorry for the lag in the time that it took us to get this recording out. I'm going to get to this point, and it's very interesting to me how this happened. By the way, for those of us listening here, Corey's story has been with us, the actual recording, for almost a full year. Part one of his story, you can actually find it on our podcast. It's called Checking Up On Me. And it's a story when Corey, you know, he talks about all these things that he believes that these entities around him are his family members. And he kind of feels that comforting sense to the whole thing, which is why he felt the need to update us. But here is the interesting thing to me as far as like the workflow and our process, right? A little behind the scenes, what we do here is when we take a submission, we go through it to make sure that, you know, that the person is actually real and we're talking to somebody who We also asked a few questions about the story just to make sure that it's a good fit for the show. And with Corey, we wanted to put him on. We already had him on before. But we had a huge mix-up with our scheduling, with the emails that were being sent out. Like, when are we going to do this? What's happening? During the call itself, we ended up running into trouble as well. We record on two tracks. So basically... It's like you can see little audio forms, like audio waves kind of like when we're recording. It's kind of like Zoom without the video. And my name kept disappearing from the list. And I kept asking him, like, are you there? And he was like, yeah, but your name's not here. And I'd be like, how is that possible? Like, no other call that we've ever done, we've had that happen. Another strange thing with the call itself is that If any of you ever work with some type of content management system, you know, in an office setting kind of thing, it's usually made to organize yourself. Like you get a lot of emails and you organize with a management system. Like it's a little software thing. Well, Corey's story literally popped up to me like on the tasks list not long ago. And I was like, why haven't we done this story? Had it been right in front of me the whole time? And I still have to ask Bianca, our assistant, the one who actually gets back to you for the True Scary Story submissions. If that story has been there, sitting there for that long, because why hadn't we seen it? What is trying to stop the story from coming out? I mean, and really, I don't like turning to these kinds of things for explanations. I really don't. Because obviously, these can all be explained with logic. You know, hey, you missed it. Hey, it blended in with something else. Hey, it's something. But all these little issues that we had the whole time really make me think about our conversation. And this part isn't on the actual recording, like the episode you just heard. But with Corey, he told me he was talking to his wife. Actually, let me see if I can find the clip. From your team going, hey, the link sent. I'm like, no, it's and it's funny because I've asked my wife. I said, hey, do you think I know spirits can affect electricity and stuff like that? I said, do you think they could possibly mess with something like this. And she's, I don't think so. I said, boys, ever since I tried to put in for this, the first time I actually wrote your team, it was a week before you got your team, got the email. It would not send. It just would not send. And then I finally got it sent through and I met y'all. And I remember your team going, Hey, there's a mess up. It shows Tuesday. And I said, well, Tuesday's fine. I'm off. I get off at four both days. And two days ago, I went, did that message? I never got a reply. And I looked and under my messages, I could screenshot it. It says message not sent. And to this day, that message will not send to your team. It's almost like something's messing with. It's almost like as soon as I said, hey, I told my wife, I said, I want to see if they want to do a part two because how things have changed. And she's like, go for it. spirits riled up a little bit in the house and i can't i mean come on this i don't know if it was a spirit but something killed my air fryer as soon as i got done with our first interview so i'm still sad about that on a funny moment but. Literally so i owe uh cory a an air fryer by the way i just wanted to make this public um but uh but yeah see like these are the kinds of things that when we're doing these recordings. And it would be, it can make an episode actually on just by itself on all the strange things. Even our sound designer, Sarah, she actually didn't edit this specific episode. Funny because also she's usually, you know, she selects these recordings to edit them and she also overlooked it or we just decided, I don't know, this is a strange thing about it. I don't understand because there's two of us that do the edits. Anyway, the whole thing was very strange. And I'm sure, you know, Corey also has updates about what has been going on after this recording. And I'm very interested in finding out. So, Corey, if you're listening, please reach out. I'm also going to be sending you an email. Just hopefully we can get in touch again and catch up a little bit to see what's happening. Anyway, I want to thank you all for listening to True Scary Story. We are getting ready for our spooky season this year. So if you have any stories, please send them in. You can go to truescarystory.com. You can also email us if you can't find the link or something. The email is hello at truescarystory.com. It's also in the description of this episode. You can also reach out to me if you have any questions. You can find me on social media. My username is Edwin Cove. That's E-D-W-I-N-C-O-V. And. Yeah, we can. I mean, I'm going to direct you to that link again so you can you can submit something and hopefully we can have you on the show. If your story fits the format and what we do here, we'll have a call and get it recorded. Times are kind of filling up really quickly because probably the season we have, you know, Halloween coming up and everything. But I'm going to be making room for it. This episode was edited and sound designed by me, Edwin Covarrubias, with help from our scheduling team, Bianca Chavez, Sofia Perez, and the rest of our team that helps make this podcast possible. I'm glad some of you found me over on Paranormal Club on YouTube. Yes, that is my YouTube channel. We're trying to get it going, hopefully before the end of the year. But yeah, I'm happy to see a lot of comments there, people that recognize me, recognize my voice from here, from this podcast. So thank you. Remember, you can get these episodes ad-free and early whenever they come out by going to ScaryPlus.com. You can try it out for free for two weeks now. And then test it out because it should be able to connect right with whatever app you're using, whether that's Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, all those things. It should be able to connect. If you have any questions about it, I'm here. You can feel free to ask me anything. Thank you very much for listening. Keep it scary, everyone. See you soon.
