The Entity on the Hill: An Unexplained Encounter in New Mexico

In rural New Mexico, during a quiet walk beneath a full moon, both the storyteller and her husband witnessed something impossible: shadowy figures, an overwhelming sense of dread, and a pale creature unlike anything either had ever seen. Was it folklore brought to life, a demonic presence, or something science has yet to explain?

Legends have a way of surviving longer than the people who tell them, and tonight the listener shares a terrifying moment when an old curse or something even darker seemed to reveal itself beneath the full desert moon. My name is Edwin and here is taw wishes true scary story. Growing up, we were exposed to a lot of religion. And we I mean me and my brother and my family. We were raised Catholic through my grandma. She immigrated from Mexico from dra Ango, and there's a lot of speculation and a lot of gossip in our family that we have. I guess you can call like a little generational curse. And it's nothing that I've really paid much attention to. Even when I was little, we believed in go ghosts. Me and my brother would watch ghost hunters and ghost adventures literally every week. Whenever any chance that we could, we would get on YouTube and watch ghost videos. So I feel like we kind of manifested a lot of that stuff up for us. So we had a very strong interest in the paranormal growing up, and we didn't really experience too much. But I noticed a lot of this started after my grandma died in two thousand and five. After she passed, it was pretty hard for my family for my grandpa, He and my grandma moved from Texas, and the majority of the stories that happened are at my grandpa's property. They lived with a family who owned a church in a little area on the outskirts of Las Cruces. So imagine desolate desert, tumbleweeds, not even a highway, just come fleet, barren desert, and this desert was a small family church that they offered up a room for my grandpa and for his family to live in. They traded work for a piece of land that my grandpa can build his house eventually on, and he did build it. It was a beautiful two story house that he built with my grandma's help, with his son's help and my auntie's help, who were of age at the time. So anyways, fast forward into the present. After my grandma had unfortunately passed away in the house, that's when we realized a lot of spiritual energy was still heavily connected. My grandpa went into a very very dark, deep depression and it was really hard to get him out of it. So we would my brother and I would constantly go visit him in the summers, on our fall breaks, on our spring breaks, anytime that we had a break. You know, we were always there. There was a lot of division in the family because he did remarry maybe three years after my grandma had passed. I felt like after that that's when the uptick in spiritual I don't know, manifestations started happening. There was an instance where I was staying over one summer at my grandpa's house and he was gone for the day. He was out in town, and so was his wife. So I was the only one in a humongous two story house. In his main living room, it's it's huge, it takes up the majority of the house. I could hear what sounded like my grandpa arguing with somebody in Spanish. I could hear it through the walls where his bedroom was. His bedroom was connected to the living room. I walked up to the door of his bedroom and I put my ear against it to make sure I heard what I had thought. You know, I was hearing was a loud argument in Spanish. When I went up to the door, I didn't hear anything behind it, so I jiggled the handle. I knocked just to make sure my grandpa wasn't in there, And when I opened the door, it was completely empty. I looked inside his closet, there was nobody in there. I also looked inside his bathroom because it's connected to the main kitchen. They kind of share like a Romeo and Juliet style doors where someone can enter through the kitchen and exit out through the bathroom. And all those doors were closed. So I go about my business. I shut the door, leave the room, and I'm in the kitchen. So like I said, like I said, the you can have easy access to my grandpa's room from the kitchen or from the hallway. So while I was in the kitchen making myself something to eat, I heard furniture moving upstairs. Now this wouldn't have been an issue if there was some people moving the furniture. The furniture that was being moved around was heavy cherrywood furniture from like the fifties, like really thick industrial stuff. It would take like a five man army to move around this bedroom set. It was heavy. So as I'm making my food, I'm listening to the shelves moving around, to the bedframe moving around like you can hear something dragging pieces of furniture above me, and above me was actually my mom's old room. Whenever my grandpa constructed the house, he set bedrooms aside for my auntie, for my uncle, and for my mom. So above the kitchen was my mom's bedroom. After my mom had moved out, my grandpa took over that room himself, and he's still sleeping in that room. Mind you, he has this whole bedroom like seven bedroom house to himself, and he only chooses to sleep in my mom's room. He doesn't want to sleep in the master bedroom anymore or any of the auxiliary bedrooms that he has. He'd rather sleep in my mom's bedroom. So he is a little bit older and he does have caretakers that take care of him well. One of his caretakers was fixing the bed and as she was adding the fitted sheet to the mattress, she put her fingers underneath the mattress to kind of spread it the fitted sheet underneath it, and she felt a bag as she stuck her hand underneath the mattress a little bit more. She took out a ziploc bag that was filled with human teeth. And this isn't the first time anybody has found something like that in my grandpa's home. A lot of common with human hair, with human teeth is associated a lot with gorandaria or bruchheria. Sometimes it's not all good luck and happy charm. Sometimes it's very awful things that happen because of that. After his caretaker found that bag of teeth, she showed it to my grandpa right away. My grandpa has been one to like dismiss supernatural things unless it happens to him, so her finding a bag of teeth underneath his mattress didn't face him at all. And this man is a veteran of the Vietnam War, so seeing that, I kind of figured it wouldn't face him as much. It's usually the unexplainable that really gets his gears going. During the summer of twenty twenty four, I feel is when a lot of my faith was tested, my family's faith was tested, and in general it really put us in a rock and a hard place. Unfortunately, in that summer, I lost my stepdad. He had a heart attack in his sleep, and that really shook the family to its core. It was very strange and unusual. While he was he did have a lot of health issues prior to his last and final heart attack. He was hospitalized for about two months, and he and my mom made the choice to move back to Las Crusis because it was cheaper. Honestly, it was a very hard summer. It was a death that really took us by surprise, and it was heartbreaking because the night prior, my grandpa told me that he just heard my mom and my stepdad laughing and laughing like they were just little children, just giggling and laughing at anything, till two in the morning, and that morning my mom said that he just didn't wake up. We had lost him. Unbeknownst to my brother and I, our biological father was actually not doing well for himself either. That year, we also lost my biological dad in December. It was during the funeral of my biological father that I feel like it was I don't know how to put into words. It was a revelation to me of how close death is for all of us. It's not on the doorstep like everybody's thinking about, or it's not somebody that can walk over the grave. It's like a whisper, something that you'll hear in the wind, but you'll only hear the clarity once it's close to your ear. Behind my grandpa's house, there's a hill. And I'm not sure how significant this hill is to the community or to the little town that my grandpa lives in, but growing up, my mom would always tell me that it was like a party hill. A lot of teenagers would go and drink and smoke up there, and it was easy to access. It wasn't a hill that was too crazy with too many trails. It was just a small hill and when you get on the top, but it you could probably see maybe fifty to sixty miles into nothing but farming community and dairies and the highway. It's all you can see from the top. I don't know the history of the hill too much. My grandpa did tell me at one point that the hill was so ancient and it had so much spiritual meaning towards the Apaches or the indigenous folk that did live in that area before the Concises colonized. And he had said that there was a band of renegade Indians who would use that mountain to do their rituals and to do their dances, and they cursed the land and whoever lives on it something like that, just old ghost stories basically, And eventually the hill got built into a small community guard garden that the little village of Mesquito del the little area that my grandpa lives in. They all got together and just made the cutest little garden, you know, just out of recyclables, tires, palettes, built right into the hillside. So this night, my husband and I decided to take a walk to this little community garden, and as we're walking, the full moon is illuminating the desert landscape. When you have the full moon and the desert, nothing is invisible. It's like the sun is out again. Things aren't visible too much into detail, but just enough where you can tell where something, you can make out the shape of something. So as my husband and I are walking to this community garden, and the closer that we get to it, are realize that it's getting darker. The light of the moon is it's casting a shadow rather than light. And as we're getting closer to the community garden, I feel what I can only describe as spider webs or in my eyes. And no matter how much how hard I rubbed or how much I scratched out my eyes, it felt like I couldn't get the spider webs out, And as we were getting closer, my husband was reaching at his face and he said, oh, I think I ran into a spider web or something. There's something in my eyes. I can't see all that well. Now. While he's experiencing this, I'm dead silent because I'm struggling on my own. You know, it's hard to walk in the desert with only the moon as your guide. Me also being severely blind, it's very difficult for me to watch where I'm walking, managing my eyesight and trying to listen to him. So in doing so, I lost my footing a little bit in the loose sand, and I had bumped into a porta potty that they have sat in front of the community garden. And as I realized I had bumped into it, I look at my husband and I tell him, you know what, it's getting really hard for me to see. And he's like me too, Do you think we should just go back? And I told him no, we're already here. We may as well just continue on and the picnic tables aren't too far from us, so we can continue just a little bit more. And we should have turned back when I said that. As we were walking closer to the picnic tables, it felt like we were walking through a haze or a fog. Everything started feeling so heavy. I was having a hard time breathing, but I didn't want to mention anything to my husband because we were already so close to the picnic tables. As we're getting closer, I'm noticing in my peripheral vision, I'm seeing shapes manifest themselves into people, like puddles of ink were just in contrasting the desert nighttime sky versus the moon, and the only thing I could see were just odd figures just existing and then not existing at all, if that makes any sense. Like they would manifest and then they would just disappear, and it felt like they were and hiding behind the foliage of the desert. So there's a lot of heavy trees and a lot of thick thorn bushes that are basically encapsulating this community garden. While I'm noticing these shapes taken place, my husband says out loud, I see people at the picnic table. I turn around and look at the picnic tables, and I reply back to him like, yeah, I see them too. I see a few people sitting around, so my husband asks me to call out to them to see if we can join them, or if we can join their area. My family and I are pretty local to this area, so it wouldn't be too crazy for me to ask, can we hang out there? Is it okay if we join you? It's a very small community and a lot of people know my grandpa. As I'm calling out to the darkness, I ask in English, Hello, Hi, can we join you? And we didn't receive a response, so I shouted back in Spanish, you know, can we visit with you? Is it okay if we join your area? And there wasn't a reply. But at the picnic table, you can see humanoid figures staring back at my husband and I like they're understanding, but they're not responding to my question or responding back if I can sit with them. At this moment, I realized that my husband and I are screaming at nothing because nothing is replying back to us. As I turned my body away from the picnic tables to look at the highway, I notice that it's very dark, like somebody had snuffed out the moon. And mind you, the moon was very full this night, and it was illuminating everything I could see. But when I turned around, it felt like somebody had cloaked us in a thick, dark veil. It was hard to breathe still. I could feel all the hairs on my arms just stand on end. And I heard next to the picnic tables that sounded like a stick or something was being crunched underneath a foot. And as I turn around, I see a white face that's contrasting between the hillside, the picnic table, and the community garden. Everything was pitch black except this face. Now, the face wasn't looking straight at me at the turn. It was turned to itsile, as if it was watching something in the desert. And after I saw the face, my husband was standing next to me, and I grabbed his arm in a panic, and I just made a sound. I just gasped. As I gasped, what felt like something out of a movie. This face was looking out into the desert, and it felt like it had phased out of reality, if that makes any sense. It was looking at the desert, and I could have sworn I heard like a thick snap of the neck where it shuddered itself. Can't, I can't even explain it not restraining the movement of snapping its neck towards us to get like if a predator was in the woods and its prey had snapped a twig next to it, how it snapped its head towards the sound. That's what it did. It snapped its head towards the sound that my husband and I had made. I hear this all the time from ghost shows and paranormal movies, that people's blood runs cold, and I had never experienced that until this night. I felt like my blood had turned into ice, and it was so hard for me to breathe. I felt like the world stopped. Everything stopped. There was no noise, there was no light, there was no heartbeat in my chest. I stood there frozen looking at this face, and it was staring back at me. Now, it wasn't a face that looked like a human face. It had pitched black eyes that seemed not to have an ending. They were hollow. It was hollow black eyes, and it didn't smile. It didn't have a grin. But you can tell where the mouth was because it looked like a mask with a simple like covering of the mouth. I'm not sure how to explain it. The best I can say is like the roar shark mask from that Superhero movie. I forgot what it's called, but it was pretty much like that. The black masses on its face were moving around, taking different shapes, not different eye shapes, but different sized hollowness of the eyes. And at that moment, I grabbed my husband's arms and I looked at him and I said, we need to go. He didn't ask me why, He didn't ask me what happened. He also turned himself around and was on my heels running basically back to my grandpa's house. And I made it a point not to share what I had seen because I know he was experiencing something. At the same time, he was also very silent. Now, my husband is a dibber dribber. He loves to talk except whenever something important's happening, and this was one of those times, and he was dead silent. He followed me all the way to my grandpa's house, and I was full horse running. I am not a runner, except for this time. I ran like my life depended on it, because I felt like it did. As we make our way back to my grandpa's house, we come in through the kitchen. Un this is pretty important. I know it's random, but it is important detail. We come in through the kitchen and we turn into the hallway which leads into some extra bedrooms and my grandpa's master bedroom. As we go in and try to settle in, me aside and he looks at me, and my husband asks me, I know you saw something. What did you see? And I told him about how it felt like I couldn't see as we were walking through the community garden, how it felt like there was a thick fog that we were walking into that was preventing me from breathing. And he confirmed that he felt like that too, like he was walking through a fog of humidity. It was just hard for him to breathe as well. I told him about the face I saw, and he told me to stop what I was talking about because he saw it too. I was having my experience. He was witnessing the exact same thing I was witnessing. After he told me to stop telling him the story, not is because he was scared, but because he wanted to finish off what he had seen, and he told me the exact same things that I was watching. He saw it all unfold at his very feet as well. So we're trying to make an idea of what we thought it was, or at least if it could be explained by science, and it couldn't. It's something that really marked us and it wasn't done with us. So while my husband and I are trying to get into bed, the bathroom light in the master bathroom turns on. Now, this wouldn't be too crazy if the light switches we're connected normally. So there's a set of light switches that you can control the bathroom on in the bedroom that we're staying in, and there's also a set on the outside of the bathroom towards the kitchen. Now it's important to know this because the outside bathroom lights they control one part of the bathroom. It's connected to a vanity. Whereas the lights that can be controlled in the bedroom, those are the overhead lights and both lights both switches. They don't control both lights, if that makes any sense. So while we're getting ready for bed, the bathroom lights turn on. I thought originally it was my brother that had come into the bathroom and forgot to turn them off. But we waited about an hour and a half and we realized that the bathroom lights weren't turning off, so I opened the bathroom to check nobody's there, and that's when I figured out that it wasn't the vanity lights that were on as if somebody was coming from the outside in. It was from our bedroom, like the lights were turned on in there, but which was impossible. My husband was already asleep and I was watching TV in bed, so I turned off the lights. Tried not to make a big deal out of it, but then we heard a cat meowing in the hallway. My grandpa doesn't own a cat. It was loud enough to wake up my husband and he asked me, did you hear that? I asked him, was it a meow? He's like, yeah, I thought I just heard a freaking cat, and I told him, you did. It's in the hallway. So we waited a little bit longer to see if we could hear nowing again, and we did hear meowing, except it was coming from the bathroom that was right next to our bedroom. That had gone to check to see if somebody had left the lights on outside of the bathroom, and nobody did, and I made sure I closed that door while I was coming back into the bedroom. So I don't know how the cat got inside that bathroom, but it felt like it was trying to come into our bedroom, you know. It was scratching out the door, and I pointed my flashlight on my phone towards the bottom of the doorframe, and you could see a little paw trying to come in. So while I've tried to scare this cat, I asked my husband run around to the opposite side where the kitchen is. I'm gonna scare the cat from inside the bedroom. You open up the door so that way it can run out. So I go to the bathroom door trying to scare this cat. And when he opened up the door to let it run outside the opposite way, there was no cat at all, and there's no way for it to escape other than through the kitchen door or the bedroom door. As for that night, my husband and I we called it. We said good night. Whatever is gonna happen is gonna happen while we were asleep. So we went to bed. The next morning, we felt drained, as if something came through the night and just sucked out all the moisture, all the energy, all of sense of life out of my husband's eye, even to the point where we joined my grandpa for breakfast in the kitchen and he looked at us both and said, what did you guys do last night? Because you look tired? And my husband and I looked at each other reluctantly trying to figure out, like you know, nonverbal communication, if we should tell my grandpa what we saw the night prior. I felt like it was pretty important to tell him. You know, he's very in tune with a lot of spiritual things. He understands more than I feel like other people do about the paranormal, about the supernatural. So we told him about our experience in the desert that night, and he said that he had a dream. And too many indigenous and Mexican cultures, dreams are very important to us. We believe that's how we get communication through the supernatural, how we can use our dreams to discern what's happening in our life. In his dream, he said that he was outside of his house in his backyard, and in his backyard is there's another hiking trail, if you will, that goes up that hill. While he was standing in the backyard, he has one street light that illuminates the entire back, so it's completely orange. He said that the dream, he could see himself very small, standing in front of the hill. I'm coming up from behind. The hill was something out of a horror movie. He said that it was a giant winged being that stretched its arms out and like a shadow. Whatever body part that this being touched was covered in darkness. As it continued to stretch out its limbs all over the desert. It covered everything in like a dark veil, and included was my grandpa's house, the hill, and the rest of the desert. And in his dream, he said that this dark figure was gently chuckling to itself like it had won again, and that's where the dream ended. He gave us a blessing basically afterwards, and he noticed that we weren't the same, if you will, we were very quiet the rest of the day. Usually my husband and I were always joking. We're always laughing, we're always talking. We were just tired. We felt like we were dead to the world. Tae Wish, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with the rest of us here at the True Scary Story community, and for everyone else here listening. Tau Wish and I actually spoke. We have a lot more to the story here from ta Wish, and we're going to publish these in an upcoming episode here at the podcast. But it's interesting how in the very beginning, you know, we talk about a curse, a potential curse, something that might have been happening here to the topic we've talked to a couple of times actually around here, where I ask, can fear be passed down from generation generation? And in that same way, can certain senses, like a certain sensitivity to the spiritual world also be passed down? Because I hear a lot of this, we mentioned it actually two episodes ago or three episodes ago. How when we hear a lot of women actually that, oh, my grandma used to practice this or my mom used to do to sense this. Now I can and now feel like my daughter can as well. Like these kinds of things they happen, it makes us wonder can these things be passed down in that same way? Can something that's not as positive be also passed down? I also wanted to bring up this point during the recording here actually for this section, specifically, when tah Wish was explaining the darkness, how it felt unnatural, almost like it was a veil over the landscape, covering the whole area. Now, all these things that we hear, You know, when you're watching a paranormal show, I don't know, a ghost hunting show, and they say the air just feels thick, or like you can't breathe, or you feel like there's sudden tightness in the chest, or like when there's finally relief when something's gone and you can breathe again, you feel a little bit different. Is there something to that? Also when you're you know, in the cool desert breeze, you know, and then suddenly you feel this like oppressive like tightness, like this something's just not right. How do you explain that? Along with that the thing in their eyes? Was it a coincidence that both of them felt that same thing as some of you may know. My family's from the desert in Sonora in Mexico, and there are a lot of stories actually from those regions. Things that you feel out in the in the night, sudden fireballs, stones being thrown, like I covered in an episode of Horror Story. There's also sightings of little creatures that are out there, but never quite like this one, like the one we got to hear today with a pale phase that turned around. I don't know about you, but I felt chills when I heard that. Actually, when I heard it live, I know it's wish. Can can you know confirm this? Because when she was explaining this, I was like WHOA Like I was. It's eerie to think that you make a sound, this thing turns and looks toward you, and you know, obviously I would have done the same thing here just kind of run away. I'm not sticking around for that, but it's bizarre, like what could have been. There's a lot of things out there that we don't know about the desert, about areas where there's not a lot of people, maybe just small communities. What was it? So I'm gonna leave you with this. Have you ever visited a place where the atmosphere, like the environment just changes from one second to the next, that it just every instinct tells you to get out of there, to just leave before you even saw anything unusual. Let me know if that has ever happened to you. This episode of True Scary Story was edited and sound designed by me Edwin Coward Rubiez, with additional production by the Scary FM team.
