Cristina and MJ discuss this, but first they read a listener story and talk about tiktok (topic starts about 15 minutes in).

Hi everyone. This is Christina and this is MJ. And this is another episode of Speaky Tells. We're now a disaster podcast because today we're talking about earthquake or an earthquake not plural. Well well, well, actually you're right. No, I take it back plural. Did you find another earthquake story or no? But I feel like the earthquake we're gonna mention is going to bring up another earthquake in the same place. Yes, yeah, but yeah, yeah, we do know, we do know. I didn't dives to super deep into that one, just kind of like, okay, mentioned first, we do have a listener story. And also MJ's back. Yay, I forgot to announce it, although I access some point it's like too much to keep announcing MJ's back. No, I'm going to keep announcing it, all right. Yes, and we have a listener's story. If you have a story that you want to send into the podcast, you can email a Spooky toos at gmail dot com. You can record a voice though and email that over or you know, type it up, whatever whatever you prefer. You can leave it on discord. You can also call the a Spooky hotline. There is a voicemailer that I still have to download and send it to you so we can listen to it. Oh, okay, awesome. We'll do that next episode though, because I don't have it ready. It's because it's in two parts. Because the voicemail cuts off. I don't know the exact time, but if you like talk long enough, it it just cuts off. Yeah, and that's what that person did. I think it's like two ish minutes or something like that. But okay, so I have to download them and put them together just so that and then send it to you. So we'll do that next episode. But yeah, send us your stories please. We love reading them, hearing them discussing them. Yeah, all of the above exactly. This was sent to via Instagram. That's another option. And I think they wanted to stay anonymous. I feel like that's what they said, but I don't remember, but I did it anyway just in case. Okay. Oh also, actually, okay, well, let me read this first part and then ask you if you remember what the story is. Okay, So they said, Ah, the Aligante story reminded me about something my mom told me once, And when I read that, I was like, what what story was that I do not remember. Sound familiar to me at all? What is what is Alikanta? Have I heard that word? Like I have heard it? You have? Yeah? Okay, so just like a quick google, it's a city in Spain. But why were we talking about Spain? We don't talk about Spain that much. What if they thought we were someone else and someone else talked about it and they thought it was us. It's like, it's like, I know, but I've heard of it. Okay, Well, yeah, let us know when we said that. I don't know, I don't remember. Oh my god, I'm so confused. Yeah. Anyway, point is, I don't remember what that story was. So if you could remind us with an episode number that would beat, that would be ideal. That would be the ideal situation. But yeah, I mean, like we've said, I'm just dumb. So I don't know. I don't know when we talked about it, but it reminded of this listener about a story. So that's what I'm gonna read. I'm gonna continue this now. Oh oh my god, I'm so dumb. Is that another word for scorpion? Oh okay, so let me read this next part. So the flowery bush, which didn't really need to be trimmed. We had just trimmed it outside the corridor that led to the patio. He found an alkane in there. It might be let me see. Hold on, okay, that would make sense. Why I've heard of it before? Oh I think it's a snake, and so is it? Why is the only thing coming up for me? Is Spain amazed? Just look up Alikanta snake. It's a it's a Mexican snake. Oh my god, and it's in it's Wow, I'm embarrassed. Okay, we have talked about snakes. Yeah, okay, oh my god, all of this makes so much sense. Now should we start the story so that it flows and maybe not confused some of our listeners. Yes, I remember the story now. It was the shape shifting oh the snake. Yes, it was the episode and I mentioned the bruqua or like that shape shifted into a snake and like the the mom would get sleepy and like fall asleep. But then the snake's tail was in the baby's mouth. Yeah that's what it was. Engross Okay, So yeah, now I will start this over because now we now we now we know, now we have the contexts the Alegantha story reminded me about something my mom told me once while we lived in Adanum in Mexico. She would feel sleepy when it was about time to nurse. My grandpa was in town from Guadalajara, and for some reason he decided to trim the boogambilia, a flowery bush which really didn't need to be trimmed. We had just done it. On the corridor that led to the patio, he found an aligante in there. He grabbed a machetta and killed it. My mom says creepy stuff always happened to her in that house. She would hear all of her china, cabinet plates and stuff break, but would go into the corridor and everything was fine. Once she saw a trail of mist leading outside towards the Bougambilia de bush. She also said she once was outside late at night and she could hear my godparent in the street whistling while on his way back to his house. All of a sudden, everything was silent, no more whistling, and my mom had urge to look upwards towards etzero. She saw three floating balls of fire and ran inside to my sisters and me. The following day, she went to my godparents' house and asked why he had stopped whistling. He told her he saw three floating balls of fire and said he knew those were brucas. I have another witch story from my hometown, but i'll send it later. Let me ask my mom to tell me again so I don't get the details wrong. And yeah, please send that story in. We love bluecast stories unless we're already received in. I just didn't don't know, but if we haven't, please send it in. But yeah, that's creepy, and I'm so glad that we realized what story. Yeah, reminded her because yeah, that makes it creepier. I don't like it, especially seeing a trail of myss also leading towards it. And that's where like the snake was looked like a bad juju or something. Yeah, yeah, I don't like it, but yeah, that was our story. If you have any stories, please send them in before we get to our topic, because it's depressing and disaster related. Uh. I wanted to ask you, MJ, what your TikTok has been looking like lately, like you're for you page. I don't even know how to describe it. It's not me. That's really oh wow, yeah, mo, mine is mostly either Palestine stuff or this like trend going around. I don't know if you've come across it, but it's like a Grinch filter. Oh I haven't seen that one. Oh you haven't seen it? Oh my god, I have to send it to you. The first one I came across was, of course I opened I opened TikTok on The first thing I see is the filter I'm talking about. Oh, oh, I know there is a theme. Yes, I have a lot of Palestine stuff, but it hasn't been as often as like the past, like last month. But the one thing that has popped up is book talk and all the fucking drama going on in book talk. Oh yeah I've seen that. Yeah yeah, with the KKK book that came out and the MC is a Mexican girl. Yeah, I thought, because I remember on Twitter I saw there was like some drama about like self, someone with self publishing a book that was like, oh you know what, this was another problematic book? My bad? What is going on with authors? There's been two problematic books I think this month or was this month? Yeah, okay, because the first one I saw was like this white woman was writing a book about an enslaver and then an enslaved person falling in love with the enslaver, and people were like, hey, this is super problematic as a white person, you should even be writing like books like this, Like what's your problem? And then did they the author doubled down? Oh my god. Uh no, there's there's that. I haven't heard about that one. But there's two more stories, and one of them's written by like I think to latinas. Oh, I have to look it up. I have to look it up. But one of them, one of the like love interests, the male love interest heavily does uh Latino stereotypes, which is like, he was a drug dealer, now he's a gang basis in jail. Is this not the American dirt lady? Or is this no? No, no, this is somebody else. Oh, I guess this is a common thing. Oh wait, you said it was a Mexican author. Yeah, well she's no, she's a Latina author. I think she's Brazilian. Well I don't even know if she considers herself Latina, but she her name is Santana Knox and the book she published was with some other girl. So Santana Knox wrote a book about I'm on TikToker, I'm looking up Santana Knox myself, Okay n Ox, last name Santana Knox controversy. So she wrote a book where one of the male carriers that the love interest, I guess I would call it. He has a lot of like stereotypes. And I'm talking about like, like I said, he was a drug dealer and a gang banger and just relies heavily on those stereotypes. And then the other drama is Tilly Cole and this is Oh, I'm pretty sure it's a white woman. Sounds like a white woman. Tilly Cole. Tilly Cole, Yeah, t I L Yeah, I co l e from She's from England. Yeah. So I don't know which book it is. I think Darkness Embraced. I could be wrong the book, but anyways, it's about the love interest isn't a KKK guy and Andy the MC is a Mexican girl and he like this redeeming arc and they fall in love and and I haven't read the book. I heard about that, like they did this too, and the character was Poc. But it wasn't until yesterday that I found out that it was actually specifically a Latina Mexican girl. Yeah, so she wrote this book, and it's just like it's gross, Like she's really romanticizing the KKK and using a woman of color in her stories for this redeeming arcs, because this guy is going to redeem himself. Like, get the fuck out. That's that's what's been on my TikTok oh. When Tanner meets Adelita Quintana, the daughter of the most brutal cartel boss in Mexico, the two are instant enemies but eventually fall in love, only to be thrust into the middle of a war between Adelita's family, the KKK, and the Hades. Hangman, it is some shit Tanner's motorcycle gang. Sorry, this man is a member of the KKK and he has a motorcycle gang. The fuck is going on? Yeah? Can you have both? I don't know, but it's so problematic. And then also the other thing, the other drama that I found out recently, this was like about like a month ago, was that there's white women who who author poc led books, Like you know, the MC is a personal color. Yeah, they use names that are like racially ambiguous, so they kind of present themselves to the author as like they're trying to pretend to be POC authors, but they're actually just white women that are using a pen name. Oh and they're yeah, but it's like crazy, so they they write books in the first person of a person of color, right, And you know when when you have people who are leaning towards reading more books that are generated with they're looking for like diverse books, thinking that they're written by diverse authors, but they're nope, nope, it's just white women writing. And and oh and then like they use stereotypes. Yeah, it's like her her chocolate skin, some shit like colored skin embrace. I don't even know, Like I don't know, some shit like that. But like I was like, you guys, you have to be really careful about who you're buying books from and who you're We had a spicy soul. Yeah, and then like oh and then what was it? What was it? It was Wednesday Books. I think it's called in their parent company. One of their employees uh tweeted like some racist shit, like racist shit, islamophobic shit, and the company has not done anything like they have like people will forget It's how like TikTok book TikTok, or you are like embedded into book talk. I am not. I just started seeing stuff about the second book drama that you just mentioned, but not anything else. Listen, book talk is so much drama. I don't really engage with it as much except for like when I need a book. But that's really right, because like I still struggle to read through our reading list because I'm so busy. But like in the rare moments that I do finish a book really early, I'm like, let's see what book talk recommends, and it's nothing but fucking drama all the time. Don't get me wrong, She's most signed. I fucking love it. I love it. Yeah, but I'm like, damn drama, monny man. My my TikTok is all either stuff about supporting Pala sign or that Grinch filter that I just sent you or people I mentioned it last episode, But there's like this what is her? I don't know her name, but she does this all the time. It was just like, oh, did you look at the message the filter? Isn't it so good? You need to find the one with there's a baby and a mom, but also the one I just send you is one of my favorite ones. But yeah, that Grinch filter has been uh make me laugh so much, A little too much that. And then there's the one I mentioned last episode where actually it wasn't a blanket. I think it was like a shirt that she's wearing and it has between made on it, and she's like, oh, I love her sol Yes, so that's her name, Mamita. Oh my god. That's been stuck in my head. And then on top of I'm just getting I've just been getting people taking that sound and like redoing it. But also there's a video I don't know who it was, singing like on this December twelve, and she's like, it's so funny. I have to send you that video too, But yeah, that's all that's all I've been seeing. You have to Yeah, I love soul. She's so funny. It's so good. I adore her. She's so funny. And then she posted I think it was today or yesterday a TikTok and her doing a British accent and it's so good. Really, I have to look that one. I got to find it. But she's so funny. I love her, love it, love it. But that's been stuck in my head the Wila Lupana song and then the sound from The Grinch. So good anyway, Yeah, I just wanted to talk about something lighter before we talk about something depressing. Mm hmmm. I will put time stamps so for the people that complain that we talk too much. So, yeah, today we're talking about the devastating twenty seventeen Mexico earthquake, but we can't talk about that earthquake without mentioning the nineteen eighty five earthquake and then the phenomena of like Nino's phantasmas ghost children that came up during both earthquakes, because that was strange that like it happened both to was weird. Yeah, So first I guess I'll just talk about the earthquake itself, because your notes are more about the story. Yeah, Sophia free that right, or Fida, Sophia, I mean her wrong, Frida? Yeah, okay. So on September nineteenth, twenty seventeen, at one fourteen pm local time, there was a seven point one magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico and it shook for about twenty seconds, but the initial guesses of how long it lasted was a minute, which is way too long. Yeah, it's really long, but twenty seconds is a lot a long time. Yeah, it is, especially for that magnitude and in case anyone needs like a refresher or a reminder, the magnitude is the size of the earthquake. There's about ten to fifteen earthquakes with that like from seven to seven point nine magnitude that happened every year all over the world, like worldwide. And then any earthquake stronger than seven point nine, like so eight between eight and ten, those only happened one to three times per year in the entire world. And then there's like I think like one and two magnitude earthquakes that happen and like all day, you know, can I feel them? Yeah, you can't feel them? And like what's it called the Iceland? I think? Or Greenland? No, I think it's Iceland. Is like went through like like two thousand or something earthquakes in one day, no way, and like they're yeah, and then they had to be evacuated because they're volcanoes about to blow. That I did see because last episode I also mentioned that I enjoy following the Mount Saint Helen's Twitter page. They're so unhinged h and they quote tweeted about that volcano. So that's why I know about it. Yeah. Yeah, but they have like I think anywhere between one thousand and two thousand earthquakes, like strong ones in one day. It was like damn strong ones, A few strong ones. Yeah. Yeah, okay again with TikTok. If you guys go and look up the I believe it's an Iceland. I want to say it's an Iceland. Could be wrong somewhere, don't quote and don't quote me, but it's somewhere over there in that area, like the Nordic area, that area somewhere. Yeah, the videos are terrifying. I'd be like, dude, I'd be shitting myself so hard, like you got to be rescued and cleaned both. Wow. No, I didn't know that. So Mexico is one of the world's most seismically active regions, which means that one of the places earthquakes happened the most in like simple terms, because it sits on top of more than one, like several tectonic plates that on top of them being tectonic plates, they also intersect with each other. Yeah, in Mexico alone, there's like forty earthquakes a day, but the majority are not noticeable. For this earthquake, though, the one that happened on September nineteenth, twenty seventeen, the epicenter, so where the earthquake was the strongest, where it originated or whatever, that was located thirty four miles south of Pueblan, and it caused damage in Puebla, Morellos and Mexico City, but the most damage happened in Mexico City. And there's several reasons why that was, which we'll get into. When that's like you can blame on people and the other it's just a location, like Mexico City was built on top of a dry lake bed and that like it's just too soft, apparently, And that's why earthquakes are more destructive on top of like the errors of like the government and people trying to cut corners when rebuilding from yeah, and building in general, and jet yeah, building in general. So what's even worse about this earthquake is that it took place on the anniversary of the destructive nineteen eighty five earthquake, And every year on the anniversary of this earthquake, there's a National Earthquake drill that happens, and then I think in the past, like, oh god, it was happening twenty seventeen, there was an earthquake around the same time the following year or the same day again, and then like yeah, there's always like been like small earthquakes happening around September. Yeah, I know, two months before this one there was another kind of big earthquake in Chiapas, but still not was it two months. It might have been less. Actually it might have been like two weeks, which is worse. But yeah, well, yeah, there's just quite a bit and it's almost like on the anniversary of it, there's an earthquake. Yeah, and this one, the one on September nineteen, twenty seventeen, took place two hours after that national drill that they do every year of the anniversary. So the epicenter of this earthquake was one hundred No, I'm not gonna say kilometers because I don't know what. Well's seventy five mile as from Mexico City, but that's where the most damage happened, but other places, like morel were closer. Mexico has this thing called SaaS mex Earthquake Warning System. It's supposed to alert people that the earthquakes happening, to get them to what they learned on the drills, like you know, get under a table, or oh, oh, the same thing happens here. Now. The other day there was an earthquake, not the other day, I think was either last month. I'm pretty sure it was last month in September that there was an earthquake and Sacramento I heard it was a pretty big one, but you know, our our infrastructure is pretty good. And then there was one in the Bay Area and our the phones went off. But the fucking phone alarm that the the emergency alarm on the phone is a lot more scarier than the earthquake. I like die, Like my soul left my body. I was like, phone trying to kill me. But then they're like, hide under tables. Oh is that what it sounds like? I've never heard it. It sounds like a what is it called? Like an amber alert? It's exactly almost exactly sounds like an amber alert. But it scares the shit out of you, right, And it's like the buildings here are pretty safe, right because they're they're they're meant to withstand earthquakes. But it's a lot more. The sound is a lot more terrifying than the earthquake. Oh my god, I didn't even feel the earthquake, but that shit scared the crap out of me. There was an earthquake though in September. I love when people barely moved to California and then there's like tiny ones that nobody even talks about it, and then you just see post them. Could you feel the earthquake? Yeah, it's like, dude, that was under five Plubi one come down. Yeah, like you're woken up from bed because the bed is shaking and your stuff were falling over. Then it's not a big and no, like the worst thing it did was like the one that we had in September was like it vibrated the windows a little bit. But I'm like, dude, somebody blasting music does that too? Does that? Yeah? And then like the head of my shower shook and like some water like fell out, and I was like, Okay, that's nice. Yeah. The SASMEX, the warning system is supposed to was supposed to give Mexico City twenty seconds advanced in warning, which is not a lot, but like I think in terms of like maybe finding somewhere to stay safe. Any second advantage is better than nothing. Yeah, so that's what it's supposed to do. Give at least twenty seconds advance of twenty seconds morning, I advanced in Wow, why can't I phrase this sentence whatever? Yes, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, twenty second morning. Yeah. Yeah, apparently that's not what happened. It was only like two seconds or during the earthquake itself, like as it was already happening. I don't think people understand how fast earthquakes happen, Like even having like a twenty second window is a law, but I doubt they could reach that goal because earthquakes happened very very fast. I see, So I wouldn't even have mattered. I feel like in some cases, I guess it depends because I feel like depending on the surface level or like where exactly the earthquake happened, like you could feel it more, feel it less, like how deep in crust. I don't know how that works. So maybe you have a better chance, but if not, then it's like you don't have time. I see. Also, some residents mistook that alert the actual alert for the drill that had been happening the anniversary drill, although places like wahaka A, Capuco, Chiban, Singo, Puebla, some of them had like forty eight seconds warning, which seems preferable. Oh that's good. Yeah. None. Yeah. In Puebla, the earthquake collapsed a church that was on the slopes of our favorite volcano. I just love saying that name. I still struggle with it. But when this church collapsed, it killed fifteen people. And then there was a second church that collapsed not far from there, and this one killed eleven people, including a baby. That was Puebla, Mexico City. However, four buildings collapsed. Oh geez, I remember that. Yeah, a lot and people were trapped inside. There was large large like dust, I don't know, dust, uh, clouds, yes, and also fires that started happening because of all the destruction and dust and all that, and several buildings caught on fire like Lasa. Also, did you did you ever watch House of Flowers? No? Oh my god, I'll tell you guys, I don't really watch TV. Okay, well what I do. It's like my comfort ones, which is like the Twilight Zone and stuff like that. Next to the Twilight Zone and Xbile, the other one X files well, I did watch House of Flowers and I accidentally started talking like what are the characters? No, I feel that because I pick up accents. Yeah, because Carmen, me and my mom, we kept talking like her because we thought she had this funny accent she put on. Paulina de la Mora is the character's name, and she has this accent that's just so fun, and so I actually started talking like her. But that that actress was hurt during this earthquake. Oh, just to like give people an idea, because I'm sure there's people out there that watched it, but you should watch it. It's it's pretty funny. Well, is it on vix because that's where I watch a lot of my Spanish stuff. No, no, this is on Netflix. Oh okay. The most damage happened on Alvaro Obregon Avenue and then Amsterdam Avenue as well as the Philippine Embassy was pretty damaged. Also. Obviously, people like lost power, like I think it said four million people wow lost power, and Guerrero, Mexico State wuhakaala and then Mexico City itself because that's where the most damage happened. But like during these kind of like disasters on Mexico comes together pretty fast to rescue people, and there was also worldwide help in like rescuing Carter and I have an episode on his studias Unknown about the beautiful, brave rescue dog Frida, because we have an episode about like historic dogs, and Frida played a big role in finding people during the earthquake to the destruction of the earthquake, and she's she's a cute dog. A rest in peace passed. Oh yeah, like the several years ago. Now I want to say they had a whole military military funeral for her. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, yeah, precious, precious dog. Okay, So in Morellos, seventy four people died. In Mexico City two hundred and twenty people died a lot Guerrero six people, and then one percent in Wahaka, and then in Mexico City, I think, what what are the buildings that affected people the most or like was the most like impact there? You could say, is that the school what is the name of the school? Was it Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education? Was that the one? Or was that no? No, no, Enrica Henriquet, Yeah, it's Enrique Salmon's school collapsed and there was twenty six students and for instrum. Actually you're going to talk a little bit more about that, so I won't get into that. But that was it. So that school collapsed, and then there was a high school that also collapsed. Wow. And yeah, like I think six thousand people were injured, almost you know, almost three hundred were killed. So then there was an investigation that the next month, in October twenty seventeen, that like they wanted to figure out, like, why was there more damage here? More damage than there should have been? Right? And so apparently this investigation revealed that since twenty twelve, there have been over six thousand complaints about construction violations in Mexico City. Wow. Yeah, and with no records if anyone followed up on those complaints. And many of the buildings mentioned in the complaints were the ones that collapsed. Wow. Local activists started protesting because they, you know, were claiming that the construction system was totally corrupt. Developers often skipped regulations, authorities ignored complaints. One one building owner, actually the owner of I think the school, the elementary school, Monica Garcia Villegas, was found guilty. She was prosecuted for culpable homicide and she was found guilty in twenty twenty because she ignored safety regulations which caused the building to collapse. And I believe she might have been the only one that has been prosecuted for this. Oh my god, the only one. But yeah, yeah, yeah, you would think there'd be more people. Oh Cecila Suarez, that's the actress from the show that I mentioned, the House of Flowers that was injured. They were filming the episode the show when the earthquake happened, and was she was injured during the earthquake. But yeah, I mean, like more more people were hurt than should have they should have been because of the like skipping cutting corners to save money, ignoring people's complaints, rebuilding oh my god, buildings with like the same material that had been stop it. Yeah yeah, like the damaged buildings. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. They began building with the same materials almost a lot of places, which made everything obviously worse. Yes, And it's also like brings up a topic that I wrote my notes, but I remember a while back, was the discussion between like British people who are like, oh my god, American houses are so flimsy and made out of wood. And I'm like, well, I live in California. If we have an earthquake, a brick building would crush us. Wood is yeah, you hide under table. Yeah. And then Mexico that was I think probably another problem because a lot of things are still made with like clay and stone over there, No, Yeah, a lot of comer a lot of yeah. Concrete, yeah, which from what I remember, the school that collapsed or one of them, had a lot of these like huge concrete slabs, which is one of the leading causes of the deaths of so many and the reason it collapsed. It's just not earthquake proof and not even like wood buildings are. But like, if you think about it, concrete slab falling on top of you versus like a wood wouldn't beam, you'd probably survive, have a higher chance of surviving a wooden thing falling on you than you would conte. But it always like blows my mind that people are like, why don't you make materials that last fur It's like because we live on a fault line, A bunch of fault lines, A bunch of fault lines, Like have you seen the movies what does it called? Yeah? And I've seen San Andrea's fault. It is It's huge. It like just it feels like it goes on forever. Mm hmm. Welcome to our Hunted Break. So the girl who never existed Frida Sophia, And as you said, on the nineteenth of September twenty seventeen, there was a massive earthquake and it was a devastating. But as soon as like the people felt the earthquake and they saw like what happened to the school, people just were like running to help the people trapped inside. You know. It led to a huge talk as Christina went over over the infrastructure, but people really came together at the time, like the community, and as soon as this happened, they started trying to remove debris and all that stuff. So within the twenty four hours of the earthquake, reports of a girl who had been trapped inside the robble began to emerge. It is not known who started the rumors, but Televisa was the first to air the story. The reporter for te Levisa Danielle diurb diuribe, I don't know these, it's d I t h u r I b E. I think it's the Thuribi said that the information had come from the rescue teams. Danielle was the only reporter at the time who was given access to the scene, and according to her, she was told by the rescue team that with a thermal scanner they had found a twelve year old girl trap under the rubble. The rescue team had made contact with her and her name was Frida Sophia, and that the rescuers was holding the last name. Why would they do that? Yeah? Red flag number one. Yeah. Danielle later began to interview rescuers, and one in particular, name Atermio, said in the interview that he had heard the voice of the girl. He went on to say, yes, some very faint voices of the girl, apparently called Sophie. He went on to say that he asked her her name and she replied Sophie, Sophie. The Associated press had a similar story given to them by another rescuer, and according to Danielle, another rescuer named Raoul Rodrigo Ernandez Ayella had said that the girl is alive, and she has vital signs. I don't know how they knew she had vital signs, considering right. Televisa went on to report that five children had been found alive in the basement of the school, and according to that same report, the day after the earthquake on Wednesday, rescue workers had seen the girl trapped under the rubble. She was asked to move her hand if she could hear them, and she did, and a rescue doug was sent in to confirm she was alive. From here, the story grew and it was a trending hashtag on Twitter, hashtag freda Sofia. Yeah, people like, I guess because it was like a story of hope, like, oh, let's save this girl. People really like threw themselves into yeah save that Sofia. Yeah. So it was a yeah, it was a huge thing. Yes, And I don't think I was. I was on Twitter, I like, I had an account at the time, but I wasn't on Twitter, you know what I mean when it happened. Yeah, I just remember all the news outlets were posting about it same same. So by Thursday, many of the rescuers were under the assumption that the girl was alive, under the rubble. There was also footage captured by a news station where a rescue worker was asking another to dig and being told what area to look for the girl. Because journalists were not allowed on site, they got their information from rescue workers and not from government officials. Soon after, government officials began to tell the same story that Frida Sofia was under the rubble and there was a rescue mission to find her. That same morning, Navy officer, I think it says Admiral adm oh Like a rank eightm Yeah, Josse Luis Vergara had told Televisa that there was in fact a girl trapped inside, but couldn't find her location and didn't know how to get to her. The Navy soon then recounted their statem and said that eleven children had been rescued from the rubble. Nineteen bodies of both children and adults were recovered, but no other child was believed to be trapped. They did find the body of another adult on Sunday. Navy Assistant Secretary anhel Enrique sar Ramienthal said, we want to emphasize that we have no knowledge about the report that emerged with the name of the girl. We never had any knowledge about the report and we do not believe. We are sure it was not a reality. I'm like one of your officials in the opposite but okay. Saramento said that a thermal camera was lowered into the rouble, but it only detected blood and the only person that was missing was a fifty eight year old woman who was an employee at the school. Her body was removed that Thursday after the earthquake. It was believed that it was this woman whose hands the rescuers saw At the time. Workers were using the help of a rescue dog named Frida, which many think is where some of the confusion came from. The Navy later apologized for the report that was given by Jossel Luis Vergara. They said that they were relying on information provided to them by the rescuers. This mismanagement of reporting has had many people angry, and rightfully so. There has also been several conspiracy theories that have emerged from this, and one of them is that because there were elections that were about to happen, they used this ploy by the government and the current president parties to garner sympathy and also to show like a force of leadership. I am unsure how this came to be, but I also think it has a lot to do with people witnessing something horrific and together having this trauma responsive confusion, Yeah for sure, plus like wanting something hopeful to latch onto. Yeah, and you know, after especially after saying like digging up kids, like that's yeah, fucked, that's fine. Yeah, it's just like I mentioned this last episode, but I just can't help but to keep being reminded of the terrible videos coming out of Gaza and like the people and children and I mean everyone being pulled out of the rubble. But yeah, like, yeah, of course they want to find someone alive down there, so like wish we'll thinking hope to latch onto. I'm not surprised that it happened during this earthquake and nineteen eighty five also, yes, okay, so that being said, I could have sworn I seen a face poking out from the hole in one of the rubble of a little girl during a news segment. Yeah, and it makes you wonder that they doctor that image. Yeah, But like the weird thing is it was like it wasn't even reported on by the news media. It was like just fans being like, oh my god, rewind that I saw something? Oh no, you're right, I remember this. Yeah. Yeah. So it wasn't even the news mea being like, there's the girl. It was like people who were watching the news and be like, what the hell is that in the background. Yeah, Like they were just talking about it and in the background the video was playing and like people pausing it could see like, oh my god, what is that? Right, but like the anchors themselves, they didn't notice it. Yeah, yeah, so I remember that, And I did get a screen recording and now it's very pixelated. I couldn't find the original video or the original original news reporting of this, but I got a screen grab of a recording and it's terrible. But anyways, this is also where things get a little weird. Story of Frida Sophia also brought me to a story from nineteen eighty five, and there was an earthquake in Mexico City that year. As Christina went over and they reported on a boy who was missing, trapped under rubble, and they nicknamed him Monchito. Hundreds of people mobilized and began searching through the rubble for Monchito. Even after all the rubble was cleared, they never found him, leading people to believe he never existed. There were also many theories, and rescuers at the time also recounted that they had contact with him. His parents, however, had disappeared from the public eye and have not been seen since. So yeah, suspicious, weird it. Yeah, did you come across the idea and I never saw it? Or I haven't seen this about Monchito, but I have seen it about Frida Sofia. But that Frida Sofia was a ghost I have heard of that I have and I don't like. The one thing that I'm thinking of is like they thought that the the in the area that they were looking for Frida Sophia they were also they were they found the late the body of the fifty eight year old woman. So I'm thinking it's like, you know how a lot of people say, like you revert to your happiest when you die, or I'm like, what if that was like her ghost just reverting back to being a little girl and it was her? Yeah? Maybe, But let me tell you about a TikTok user. Her name is Lay. Oh my god, I lay there, I lay there, and she was a lot younger when the earthquake happened, and so she posted a video. I don't know when she posted it actually, but she insists in her video that Philadosophia was actually a ghost and that that ghost of that little girl that is Philosophia, she had been seeing that ghost since twenty twelve. Oh yes, she's like the news they were wrong in the sense that they thought it was someone alive. But Fida Sophia does exist. She's just a ghost. She said the ticktoker that she lived in a building in front of the schoolba's men and that there was at least like two or three occasions where she herself saw Sophia the ghost as well as a family member of hers. Maybe that's what was captured in the news segment, right, yeah, yeah, that or like the way you said that it was the woman who had died and then just she reverted back into like being a child a child. Yeah, but she's uh the TikToker she said that or TikTok. I don't know if she's like an actual TikToker or she like just posted this one video and then didn't post anything else. I haven't looked at her account because I just came across like an article about it. So she said that she used to walk her dog super late, like at one or two am. Oh my god, Like why you're just begging to see something in those hours, I know, especially like in Mexico, it's like there's so many creepy shit there, like you do not go out unless you absolutely have to. Yeah, during one of those walks, she came across a girl as like a translucent girl in white, and that was Philosophia, And I guess she had also seen her in her like apartment building, like in the hallway as well in between like the I guess she's had a long hallway and then there was like a fountain at the end of the hallway and they've seen her, and like her family has seen Philosophia there too. She she came out and was like saying that it's actually it's real, the ghost of a girl. But she she was real, So I don't know, I don't know, that's creepy. But also did you know that do you remember the legend of La Planchada. Yes, Okay, so there's a version of the legend where Laplanchada the nurse and I guess just a cook reminder for anyone that doesn't remember. But the legend of Laplanchada is that in hospital quarrees and squares, this nurse like loved this doctor and then he got married to someone else and she was like jealous, and then she began like mistreating her patients and then like killed herself in guilt and then now comes back. And there's some versions of the legend where she's like evil, but there's other versions where she comes back and just helps people in the hospital. Yeah, but there's a version of the legend that says that she died during the nineteen eighty five earthquake. She was a nurse in the hospital when the hospital collapsed, and the hospital did collapse, and people you know, did die in the hospital, including nurses and patients and doctors. So one version of the legend is that she was one of those nurses and now she comes back still like helping people in the afterlife, which I did not know that version at all. It's all connected, yeah, yeah, so a couple of couple of ghosts attached to these earthquakes. And there's also an urban legend that Mexico. I don't remember if it's all of Mexico, Mexico or just Mexico City is cursed and that there's an earthquake, like a devastating earthquake every thirty years. Have you heard that one? No? I have not. Oh yeah, yeah, So apparently in the years nineteen eleven, nineteen thirty two, nineteen fifty seven, nineteen eighty five, and then twenty seventeen, we're all devastating earthquakes in stud that Mexico were like more than seven point zero in magnitude and like a lot of deaths. Wow, I had no idea. Yeah, yeah, so if that it's if that's true, then the next one is would be I can't do mathul. I'm with my calculator. I feel that thirty twenty forty seven, twenty forty seven. Wow. Yeah. I hope they're prepared by them, hopefully, hopefully. I'm curious to see if there will be another ghost child. That is so weird though that it happened twice, right, and it made news twice because there was newspapers of the little boy who was missing in the eighty in eighty five. Yeah, certainly strange, but yeah, I guess that brings us to the end of this episode. Do you have anything else to add about the earthquake. No, I think that's all okay. Oh, actually I do have one more thing to add about the earthquake. After it happened. So it happened in September. And I was in Guada Dajaa in October twenty seventeen and there was a game. I don't remember who they were playing or what if. It was like a friendly game, but it was like Mexico versus another country, like it was like a national game. There was a moment of silence during during the game for the earthquake and all like all the victims of the earthquake, and uh, it was like so emotional. I was crying like a little bait, like a little baby during the moment of silence. My my grandpa rest in peace, was still alive and so and he like he you know, loves soccer and we were like all watching the game and he was there with He normally is always raining like an Atlas jersey, but he brought out his Mexico jersey for that and he stood up during the moment of silence and he's like because he always coughs instead of crying. Instead of crying, he starts coughing, so he was like, and every time I hear him do that, then I start crying and so it was Yeah, it was emotional. But but yeah, that's all I was gonna add about the earthquake. But yeah, before we go, first I want to say sorry to all the patrons for being behind on so much. Oh yes, I'm sorry. We are sorry. We will get back to it soon. Not this week, but m maybe next week. Yeah, maybe maybe we'll see. I will make stickers though this week, I think, and send them out. But yeah, we're like behind on episodes. I did record. I'm behind on everything life life is like. I recorded one with Carmen, a Patroon episode okay in October, so there was a monthly episode. And yeah, well, before we go, do you have any recommendations spooky or anything. I'm saying anything now since you don't watch anything or you haven't watched anything, I don't want. Yeah. The only thing I've watched is the Twilight Zone, but the old one, like the original one, and that's if you guys want to rewatch that. They have a pretty lengthy episode like list, there's a lot of episodes. Even though there was I think only like five seasons each each season had like a lot, so it's gonna take you a minute while through. Yeah, Like I mean, I started rewatching it like maybe six months ago and I'm still I'm barely like an episode two. But I don't really watch TV, so they're sad. Yeah, but it takes. It takes a while. Like we will watch an episode, maybe two episodes, just three episodes a week if that, if we get a chance, but yeah, I don't really, but for those like binging, there's several days worth of episodes, maybe like a month even probably like a month. Yeah. Wow, Well I have been watching the Twin Flames documentary on Netflix, and that is wild. I did. I haven't even heard this and tell you guys, you haven't looked you Oh wow, I don't watch anything. Yeah, Twin Flames is like this cult tea. Well, no, it is a cult. The Twin Flames University itself is a cult. And then the idea of a twin Flame and looking or like new Age believes like I was telling you earlier, like what we were messaging, but that new Age cult to being in a cult pipeline. Oh my god, it's so real. And that's what happened to a lot of these people. They were like googling, how I felt the most intense connection ever? What is this? And then they would google that and then like twin flames Flame University would pop up and it was run by uh, this guy. Oh my god, is it still run Actually a might still be going on, but Sheila and I cannot remember the guy's name. They have been together, I don't know how long. Too long apparently, yeah, too long. Apparently they've been running this like university to teach others to find their twin flame because they have found each other. So this means that they're now the sole authority figure into telling people how to do this, and and they like talk about God and like all these godly things, and then like he people would sign up and like they pay like this insane amount of money for these classes, different black classes, to like get to know themselves so they could be like a better partner and then eventually find their twin flame. That's called therapy. But then he started, yeah, yeah, right, do that instead. But then he started telling people like, oh, this is your twin flame, Like I know it, this is your twin flame. You have to be with this person and basically forcing these two people together. There was like one girl who was like eighteen, and he told her that her twin flame was like this guy that was like fifteen years older than her and who was a felon, and then he was like abusive. Yeah, just things like that. It's a wild documentary. I listened to a podcast about it a while ago, which is also really good, and it's almost the same information. Honestly, I think this documentary might include like a few newer things. There was this other girl who like thought her twin flame was her ex and he the guy told her like, yeah, that's your twin flame. You have to do whatever you can to like be with this person. And then this ended up resulted in her getting like a restraining order placed on her m m and then she was arrested for violating that restraining order. Oh my god. You know, following this twin flame mindset that is bonkers. Like yeah, like if you have if someone has to tell you who your twin flame is, yor not your twin flame, if someone has to tell you what a twin flame is. The idea of twin flame just isn't real to me, oh man, But yeah, you should watch it. You should watch it. It's good. That's crazy. Yeah. Yeah, do you have a book club update? I should be finished reading probably by this weekend or next for sure. Whoo okay, okay, we're getting close. I'm sorry, guys, I just been I've been busy. I got injured. My dad had surgery. No, don't even worry. It's called the book lover Busy people. Life is like it's in the name, you know, Like I think that I think what was it like? Uh? The past two weekends was the first two weekends and like I want to say, like four months that I actually got to sleep in. Man. Yeah, it's like, oh my god, is this is this is what it feels like to get sleep Oh wow, it's rough out here, it is. But yeah, I guess this actually brings us to the end of the episode.
